When Allah Created Adam, What Did He Command the Angels to Do?
He, Almighty, commanded the angels to prostrate themselves before Adam. "And remember when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:34).
1. The Command and the Demonstration of Knowledge |
In Surah Al-Baqarah the command is narrated right after Allah taught Adam the names of all things and had him demonstrate that knowledge before the angels, covered in What Did Allah Teach Adam? Ibn Kathir notes that the demonstration took place after the prostration and is placed first because it answers the angels' question about the successor. Elsewhere the Quran ties the command to Adam's creation itself: "So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him" (15:29).
2. Immediate and Total Obedience, With One Exception |
Every angel complied with this command without hesitation, establishing prostration before Adam as the standard response Allah expected. Only one being present, Iblis, refused, a refusal covered in detail in Why Did Iblis Refuse to Prostrate Before Adam?
3. A Command Repeated Across Seven Surahs |
This command to prostrate is not recorded only in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:34; it is repeated in Surah Al-A'raf 7:11, Surah Al-Kahf 18:50 and Surah Ta-Ha 20:116, and also in Surah Al-Hijr 15:28-29, Surah Al-Isra 17:61 and Surah Sad 38:71-72, each retelling emphasizing a different aspect of the moment, covered further in Who Did Allah Command to Prostrate Before Adam? The repetition across seven separate surahs reflects how foundational this event is considered to the account of humanity's creation.
