What Did Allah Teach Adam?
Allah Almighty created Adam, peace be upon him, and favored him above many of His creations. He gave him vast knowledge and taught him the names of all things, then He told the angels to tell Him those names. The angels did not know them. He told Adam to tell them the names, and he did. "He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, 'Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true.' They replied, 'Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.' Allah said, 'O Adam! Inform them of their names.' Then when Adam did, Allah said, 'Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?'" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31-33).
1. Knowledge Given Before Any Test |
This teaching happened at the very beginning of Adam's story, before his trial in Paradise or his descent to earth. Scholars point to this ordering as significant: Allah equipped Adam with knowledge before placing any responsibility on him, establishing a pattern in which capability is granted before accountability is required.
2. A Demonstration to the Angels |
This exchange immediately follows the angels' earlier question about why Allah would place a being on earth who might cause corruption and bloodshed. By showing that Adam possessed knowledge the angels themselves lacked, Allah demonstrated a wisdom in creating humanity that went beyond what even the angels could fully perceive in advance.
3. The Prelude to the Command to Prostrate |
This demonstration of knowledge comes directly before Allah's command to the angels to prostrate before Adam, covered in When Allah Created Adam, What Did He Command the Angels to Do? The sequence in the Quran presents Adam's honored status as something first shown through knowledge, then confirmed through the angels' response.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31-33 records Allah teaching Adam the names of all things and having him demonstrate this knowledge before the angels. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
