Why Did Iblis Refuse to Prostrate Before Adam?
Iblis was arrogant and saw that he was far superior to Adam, as Allah Almighty created Adam from mud, whereas Iblis was created from fire. "And remember when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam,' so they all did, but not Iblis, who protested, 'Should I prostrate to the one You have created from mud?'" (Surah Al-Isra 17:61).
1. A Comparison Based on Material, Not Character |
Iblis's objection rested entirely on what each being was made from, fire versus mud, treating this as self-evident proof of superiority. His argument ignored the honor Allah had given Adam, including the knowledge Allah taught him, covered in What Did Allah Teach Adam?, and rested on a comparison of materials alone (7:12).
2. The First Sin Was Arrogance, Not Denial of Allah's Existence |
Iblis did not deny Allah's existence or His right to command; he acknowledged the command and then refused to obey it out of self-regard. This distinction matters in Islamic scholarship: his fall came from arrogant refusal that constituted disbelief in the face of a clear command, a warning that conviction alone does not protect a person from disobedience rooted in pride.
3. A Refusal With Lasting Consequences |
This single act of arrogance is presented in the Quran as the origin of Iblis's permanent enmity toward Adam and his descendants, a hostility explicitly warned against in Surah Al-Kahf 18:50, covered in Who Did Allah Command to Prostrate Before Adam? What began as a comparison of materials became, in the Quran's telling, the root of the ongoing struggle between human beings and Iblis.
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir, on the defect in Iblis's reasoning (7:12): “He was wrong, may Allah disgrace him, in his analogy and also in his claim that fire was nobler than clay. Clay is characterized by steadiness, forbearance, deliberation, and firmness; clay is the place of vegetation, growth, increase, and improvement. Fire is characterized by burning, recklessness, and haste.” See the knowledge Allah gave Adam. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Isra.
