Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave) is the 18th chapter of the Quran, comprising 110 verses. It takes its name from the story of the companions of the cave, young believers who sought refuge from religious persecution. The chapter contains profound narratives, including the story of the man with two gardens, the journey of Moses and Khidr, and the account of Dhul-Qarnayn, delivering timeless lessons on faith, humility, and the transient nature of worldly life. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Kahf in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَابَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُ عِوَجَا}
{ٱلْكِتَابَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 1
1. Allah praises His noble Self at the beginning and end of all matters. He praises Himself here for having sent down the Quran to His servant and messenger, Mohammad (peace be upon him), because the Quran is the greatest blessing He sent to the people of earth, the means by which He brought them forth from darkness to light. Allah has made His book straightforward. In it there is no crookedness or confusion.
{قَيِّماً لِّيُنْذِرَ بَأْساً شَدِيداً مِّن لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْراً حَسَناً}
{ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 2
2. Almighty Allah has made His Book moderate, exempt of all excess regarding the precepts that He decrees, free from negligence in matters that are indispensable. This means that in the Quran is a warning to those who have disobeyed and denied, and did not believe in Him, of an immediate punishment in this life and a later punishment in the afterlife. The Quran also announces a generous recompense to believers who reinforce their faith in Allah, His books and messengers with good actions. Allah reserves for them a very fair reward which is paradise.
{مَّاكِثِينَ فِيهِ أَبَداً}
{مَّاكِثِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 3
3. They shall stay in paradise eternally. They shall never move from it or perish.
{وَيُنْذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَداً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 4
4. Allah sent the Quran to warn and caution those unbelievers who said: ‘Allah has taken a son.’ Those are the Arab unbelievers who used to say: ‘We worship the angels, the daughters of Allah.’ There are those among the Christians who made Jesus the son of Allah and among the Jews who made Ezra the son of Allah. The warning includes all those mentioned; it also includes everyone who attributed an offspring to Allah.
{مَّا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَلاَ لآبَائِهِمْ كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ أَفْوَاهِهِمْ إِن يَقُولُونَ إِلاَّ كَذِباً}
{لآبَائِهِمْ} {أَفْوَاهِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 5
5. In reality, they have no evidence or proof for their false statements concerning the offspring which they attribute to Allah. Neither have their fathers any knowledge about this matter or proof to support their claim. They blaspheme in their disbelief. Their words are only lies and fabrications.
{فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ إِن لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُواْ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَسَفاً}
{بَاخِعٌ} {آثَارِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 6
6. Do not torment yourself, O Mohammad, with grief over those polytheists because they did not believe in Allah and in this Quran. Inform them of what was revealed to you from your Lord and call them to Allah. This is your mission; you need not guide them.
He who finds the right path does so for himself and he who goes astray and deviates does so to his own detriment.
{إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُم أَحْسَنُ عَمَلاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 7
7. Allah has made the world beautiful and green to see how people would react – as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in the Hadith. He made plants, solid matters and animals as ornaments to the world and its people to test them regarding their understanding of the meaning of these ornaments which witness the presence of the Creator and His Oneness, to know which of them would do good actions, according to His will.
{وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيداً جُرُزاً}
{لَجَاعِلُونَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 8
8. Then Almighty Allah speaks of the ephemeral nature of this world which will disappear as will everything in it. He says that He will reduce the earth which was fresh, green and radiant and was a pleasure for the eyes to look upon to a waste and barren land where no plants grow.
{أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ ٱلْكَهْفِ وَٱلرَّقِيمِ كَانُواْ مِنْ آيَاتِنَا عَجَباً}
{أَصْحَابَ} {آيَاتِنَا}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 9
9. Ibn Abbas said explaining the revelation of this verse that the people of Quraish sent two men to the Jews of Medina asking them for their opinion concerning Mohammad (peace be upon him)’s call. The Jews told the two messengers from Quraish: ‘Ask him about three matters and if he answers you, then he is certainly a prophet sent from Allah, otherwise he is a pretentious man and you can decide his fate. 1- Ask him about the extraordinary story of the young men who lived in the first millennium. 2- Ask him about a man who toured the earth from East to West; what is his news? 3- Ask him about the soul, what is it?’
When the people of Quraish asked the Prophet these questions, he requested them to wait until the following day and did not say, ‘If Allah wills.’ The revelation was therefore not sent to him for fifteen days. The Prophet was saddened by this for the polytheists began to fabricate lies. Gabriel was then sent down to reveal to him this chapter. Almighty Allah begins by recounting the story of the people of the cave. They are youths who lived in the first millennium. Allah tells His prophet that their case was not one to be wondered at in view of Allah’s ability and power. Allah created the heavens and the earth and what lies between them. The creation of all this is more wonderful than the case of the people of the cave. Then Almighty Allah begins to telling the story of the people of the cave: “Do not think that the story of the people of the cave and of their epitaph, who slept for a long time, is the only strange sign among Our countless signs which prove Our omnipotence. The creation of the heavens and earth and what lies between them and in them is more remarkable than the story of the people of the Cave.”
{إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُواْ رَبَّنَآ آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّىءْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَداً}
{آتِنَا}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 10
10. Recount, O Mohammad, the story of the youths who fled from their people so that the latter would not oblige them to recant their religion. They took refuge in a cave to escape the sight of their people. When they entered the cave, they asked Allah to favour them with His mercy and kindness and to give them guidance and rectitude.
{فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰ آذَانِهِمْ فِي ٱلْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَداً}
{آذَانِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 11
11. We covered their ears with a seal to prevent them from hearing and made them go to sleep in the cave for a number of years.
{ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَيُّ الحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُواْ أَمَداً}
{بَعَثْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 12
12. Then We awoke them from this sleep to know which of the two parties who were in disagreement, notably the sleeping youths and those who were hostile to them, were more accurate in their calculations and more informed of the period which they had slept in the cave.
{نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نبَأَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ إِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ آمَنُواْ بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنَاهُمْ هُدًى}
{آمَنُواْ} {وَزِدْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 13
13. We are informing you of the story of those young men who sought refuge in the cave exactly as it happened; there is no room for doubt or suspicion concerning this story.
They were young men of tender years who had been guided to the belief in their Lord, there is no Allah but He, and worshipped Him alone without partner. Thus Allah reaffirmed their steps on the path of rectitude, strengthened their belief and guided them to good work and asceticism. (Ibn Katheer believes that the story of the people of the cave took place before the appearance of Christianity and not after it, because the Jewish rabbis were aware of it and had sent messengers to Quraish to ask the prophet about it in order to show him up as incompetent.) (Scholars have deduced from this verse that belief can either increase or decrease.)

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 14
14. It is said that those young men looked at the idols and statues which their people worshipped and felt an aversion for them. So they chose a place for themselves where they worshipped Allah. Having learnt of this, their people presented their case to the King who was both tyrannical and stubborn. He summoned them and inquired about what they did and what they worshipped. Allah inspired them with courage and strengthened their hearts with the light of faith. They stood before the king and admitted their aversion to worshipping idols and their worship of Allah alone, the Creator of all things. They then invited him to the worship of Allah alone. This is the sense of ‘We made firm their hearts.’ When the King wished to convince them to return to the religion of their people, they told him that they had embraced the true religion and that they would never go back to worshipping idols or else they would be committing an atrocity and depravity (‘then should we utter an enormity’).
{هَـٰؤُلاۤءِ قَوْمُنَا ٱتَّخَذُواْ مِن دُونِهِ آلِهَةً لَّوْلاَ يَأْتُونَ عَلَيْهِم بِسُلْطَانٍ بَيِّنٍ فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِباً}
{آلِهَةً} {بِسُلْطَانٍ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 15
15. Our people have worshipped other gods beside Allah, idols that can neither harm nor serve and they have no proof or evidence to justify their worship of these idols. If only they could advance convincing proof of the truth that they are gods. No one does more wrong than those who lie to Allah and attribute to Him words which He did not say and precepts which He did not command (‘he invents a lie concerning Allah’).
{وَإِذِ ٱعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهَ فَأْوُوا إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ يَنْشُرْ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِهِ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُمْ مِّنْ أَمْرِكُمْ مِّرْفَقاً}
{فَأْوُوا}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 16
16. It is said that the king threatened to harm them if they did not return to the religion of their people and he imprisoned them. However, they escaped from prison and took refuge in the cave. This is why some said to the others: “We have withdrawn from our people and denied what they worshipped with Allah, so keep away from them, part with them and go to the cave where Allah will bestow on us His mercy and save us from our people. He will contrive matters in such a manner that we shall benefit by it.’ Thus, they went to the cave and sought refuge there; and their people were unable to find them.

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 17
17. The cave in which the young men took refuge was situated in such a way that when the sun rose, it inclined to the right of the cave and when it set its rays entered the cave through its northern door (that is, it slanted to the left of the cave). (Ibn Abbas said the meaning of ‘pass them’ is to ‘leave them’, or ‘move away from them’.) The young men were in a vast space inside the cave, sheltered from the sun. Among the signs of Allah and His kindness to them is that He guided them to faith and strengthened them in it when they stood before the tyrant king. Then He guided them to this cave which was penetrated by light, air and sun so that their bodies would remain healthy. It was Allah Almighty who guided these young men from among their people to His worship and the belief in Him. He who has been guided by Allah finds the true path; he who has been led astray will not find a guiding friend.
{وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ أَيْقَاظاً وَهُمْ رُقُودٌ وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ ٱليَمِينِ وَذَاتَ ٱلشِّمَالِ وَكَلْبُهُمْ بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِٱلوَصِيدِ لَوِ ٱطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَاراً وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْباً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 18
18. It is said that the young men slept with their eyes open to preserve them from decay, so that the viewer would think that they are awake while they were in fact asleep. Allah turned them onto their left side then onto their right side to prevent the earth from eating away their bodies thus causing them early decay. Their dog was stretched out at the entrance of the cave, sitting up on his haunches as if he were keeping watch over them. Almighty Allah shed majesty on them so that no person could approach or touch them until their hour had come. If anyone had seen them in that situation, he would have been awed and filled with fear.

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 19
19. Just as Allah Almighty made them sleep in the cave and kept their bodies from decay, He awakened them from their sleep while conserving their bodies, hair and skin in a healthy state. They asked each other how long they had tarried. They said: “We tarried a day or part of a day (as it is said that they entered the cave at the beginning of the day and they were awakened at the end of the day);” they added, finding that the period of their sleep had been too long: “Allah knows how long we have tarried. What is essential now is to send one of us into the city with whatever silver we have, to search for the best and purest of food to bring back thereof. This messenger must do his best not to draw attention to himself; he must be courteous both going and coming back so that no one can suspect where we shelter.
{إِنَّهُمْ إِن يَظْهَرُواْ عَلَيْكُمْ يَرْجُمُوكُمْ أَوْ يُعِيدُوكُمْ فِي مِلَّتِهِمْ وَلَن تُفْلِحُوۤاْ إِذاً أَبَداً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 20
20. “Because if our people learn of our whereabouts, they will torture us and hurt us to force us to return to their religion, or they will kill us by stoning. And if we agree to return to their religion, there will be no good for us either in this life or in the next.”
{وَكَذٰلِكَ أَعْثَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَعْلَمُوۤاْ أَنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَأَنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لاَ رَيْبَ فِيهَا إِذْ يَتَنَازَعُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَمْرَهُمْ فَقَالُواْ ٱبْنُواْ عَلَيْهِمْ بُنْيَاناً رَّبُّهُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِهِمْ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ غَلَبُواْ عَلَىٰ أَمْرِهِمْ لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ مَّسْجِداً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 21
21. Just as we put them to sleep and awakened them in the same condition, we made the people who lived at the time discover their whereabouts so that those who doubted the resurrection and the last day would know that Allah’s promises are true and that resurrection will undoubtedly take place at the appointed time as decreed by Allah. There was much controversy concerning these young men. Some people said: “Block the entrance of the cave with stonework and leave them to the will of Allah.” Others said that they would construct a place of worship on the cave so that people could pray there.” (‘We shall build a place of worship over them’.)
{سَيَقُولُونَ ثَلاثَةٌ رَّابِعُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ خَمْسَةٌ سَادِسُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ رَجْماً بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيَقُولُونَ سَبْعَةٌ وَثَامِنُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ قُل رَّبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِم مَّا يَعْلَمُهُمْ إِلاَّ قَلِيلٌ فَلاَ تُمَارِ فِيهِمْ إِلاَّ مِرَآءً ظَاهِراً وَلاَ تَسْتَفْتِ فِيهِمْ مِّنْهُمْ أَحَداً}
{ثَلاثَةٌ} {ظَاهِراً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 22
22. Allah says: “People differed over the number of these youths. Some said they were three and their dog was the fourth, others said they were five and their dog was the sixth.” Allah enfeebled their words, considering them as conjectures on the unknown, without foundation. Still others said that they were seven and their dog was the eighth. Allah did not weaken their words and did not qualify them as conjectures which suggests the true nature of what they said, and that they spoke the truth, as Ibn Abbas said. And Allah told his noble prophet that it was preferable in such cases to say that Allah alone knows the truth since it is impossible to discuss matters like these without knowledge. In reality only a very few people knew how many youths they were.
Addressing the prophet, Allah warns men not to enter into argument over this matter and tells them to discuss it only within limits because it is not very useful to know the exact number of sleepers. Allah asks men not to question any of the people of the Book who claim to know the truth concerning the people of the cave, for they know nothing. What they say is conjecture and has no foundation. Allah announces the indubitable truth on the subject of these young men. The essential thing in the matter is not to know their number but to grasp the moral of the story.
{وَلاَ تَقُولَنَّ لِشَاْىءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذٰلِكَ غَداً}
{لِشَيْءٍ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 23
23. Allah tells His prophet that if he is determined to do something in the future, he must refer it to the will of Allah, i.e. the prophet should not say that he would do such and such a thing on the morrow but say, “If Allah wills,” because something may prevent him from fulfilling what he undertook to do in which case he would fail his promise.
{إِلاَّ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ وَٱذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ وَقُلْ عَسَىٰ أَن يَهْدِيَنِ رَبِّي لأَقْرَبَ مِنْ هَـٰذَا رَشَداً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 24
24. When the unbelievers asked the Prophet about the story of the people of the cave, he told them that he would answer them on the morrow (he did not say “if Allah wills”). The revelation to him was thus delayed for fifteen days. Thus, Allah drew His prophet’s attention to the necessity of submitting everything to the Will of Allah and that the Prophet must remember the name of Allah should he forget to say, “If Allah wills.” For the mention of Allah’s name drives away the demons. And if he is asked about something he does not know, he must turn to Allah to ask Him to guide him to the right path.
{وَلَبِثُواْ فِي كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلاثَ مِاْئَةٍ سِنِينَ وَٱزْدَادُواْ تِسْعاً}
{ثَلاثَ مِئَةٍ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 25
25. The period of their stay in the cave from their entry into it until they were aroused and began asking each other what had happened, was three hundred solar years (according to the solar calendar which was in use among the people of the Book) which equals three hundred and nine lunar years (the calendar which was in use among the Arabs).
{قُلِ ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثُواْ لَهُ غَيْبُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلأَرْضِ أَبْصِرْ بِهِ وَأَسْمِعْ مَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلاَ يُشْرِكُ فِي حُكْمِهِ أَحَداً}
{ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 26
26. Then Allah confirmed that the period which the youths tarried in the cave is that which He has shown in the previous verse. He told those who dispute over the number of the youths and the period of their stay in the cave, that Allah knows better than them about the youths, their number and the period which they tarried in the cave. He has revealed the indubitable truth about the period of their stay in the cave. Allah knows the mysteries of heaven and earth and the conditions of both them and their inhabitants. Nothing escapes His knowledge. How He sees all that exists! How He hears all that is audible! Nothing escapes Him. It is Allah Almighty who owns the creatures and matters. His law is incontestable. He has no associate or counselor. Praise be to Allah the all-Saintly.
{وَٱتْلُ مَآ أُوْحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِن كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ لاَ مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَداً}
{لِكَلِمَاتِهِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 27
27. Recite the Book that has been revealed to you by your Lord, work according to its precepts and follow its orders and its prohibitions. No one can change the threats in it to the sinners and the promises to the faithful believers. If you do not follow it, you shall undergo the punishment which Allah threatened those who disobeyed Him with and you shall find neither a supporter nor a shelter to seek refuge.
{وَٱصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِٱلْغَدَاةِ وَٱلْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ وَلاَ تَعْدُ عَيْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ تُرِيدُ زِينَةَ ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَلاَ تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 28
28. Stay with those who remember Allah. Praise and glorify Him and invoke His grace morning and evening. Those who remember Allah are the believers among Allah’s servants, whether rich or poor (it is said that this verse was revealed when the nobility of Quraish asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) to keep company with them alone to the exclusion of the weak poor among the Muslims). Then Almighty Allahs ordered His honourable prophet not to ignore the weak and poor believers in order to favour the noble and rich. He also commanded him not to obey those whom worldly matters occupy to the harm of religion and the worship of Allah, nor those who exceed the bounds set by Allah and transgress in disobeying Him and committing sins, and whose behaviour is excessively impertinent.
{وَقُلِ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ فَمَن شَآءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَآءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ نَاراً أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَا وَإِن يَسْتَغِيثُواْ يُغَاثُواْ بِمَآءٍ كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَشْوِي ٱلْوجُوهَ بِئْسَ ٱلشَّرَابُ وَسَآءَتْ مُرْتَفَقاً}
{لِلظَّالِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 29
29. Mohammad, tell the people: “What I have brought to you from your Lord is the uncontested truth; whosoever wills, let him believe and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. We have prepared for those who deny Allah and His Prophet, those who were unjust unto themselves through their disbelief, a fire whose walls encircle all those who enter it. If the damned ask for water to quench their thirst, they will be served with extremely hot water which will burn their faces when they approach it to their lips to drink. Calamitous drink! And what a terrible dwelling place to recline and rest. And what a miserable pillow!
{إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ إِنَّا لاَ نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ عَمَلاً}
{آمَنُواْ} {ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 30
30. After having mentioned the state of the damned, Allah praised the state of those happy souls, who believed in Allah, trusted His Prophet, and did good works. Almighty Allah says that He will not let go unrewarded any of His creatures
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهِمُ ٱلأَنْهَارُ يُحَلَّوْنَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَسَاوِرَ مِن ذَهَبٍ وَيَلْبَسُونَ ثِيَاباً خُضْراً مِّن سُنْدُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلأَرَآئِكِ نِعْمَ ٱلثَّوَابُ وَحَسُنَتْ مُرْتَفَقاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 31
31. Those happy believers enter Paradise where streams and water flow on all sides, to stay there forever. There, they wear jewelry, notably bracelets of gold and pearl, and clothes made of green silk (as mentioned in other verses: see chapter 22- Al-Haj (The Pilgrimage), 23 and chapter 35- Fatir (The Originator of Creation), 3), including fine clothes such as shirts and the like and others which are thick and have golden embroidery, like brocade. They will seek comfort by reclining upon couches and beds. Paradise is the goodly reward for their deeds and a comfortable dwelling place.

{أَعْنَابٍ} {وَحَفَفْنَاهُمَا}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 32
32. Allah says to His prophet: “Give those polytheists who asked you to drive out the believers who invoke their Lord morning and evening, the example of two men, one of whom Allah enriched by giving him two gardens of vines surrounded by palm trees and separated by sown fields beneficial to man.
{كِلْتَا ٱلْجَنَّتَيْنِ آتَتْ أُكُلَهَا وَلَمْ تَظْلِم مِّنْهُ شَيْئاً وَفَجَّرْنَا خِلالَهُمَا نَهَراً}
{آتَتْ} {خِلالَهُمَا}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 33
33. “Each of the two gardens yielded fruits with the same productivity over the years contrary to what is customary to vines and fruit trees which produce a good crop one year and are less productive the next. Allah caused a big river to run through both gardens. Streams branched off from it so that the irrigation of the trees and plants was permanent. The splendour of the gardens was thus increased and its produce augmented.
{وَكَانَ لَهُ ثَمَرٌ فَقَالَ لِصَاحِبِهِ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُ أَنَا أَكْثَرُ مِنكَ مَالاً وَأَعَزُّ نَفَراً}
{لِصَاحِبِهِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 34
34. “One day when the trees in the gardens were covered with fruit, the owner of the gardens met one of his friends who was a believer and who used to call him to faith and remind him that the world is ephemeral, that a reasonable person should not be flattered by it, and that the reward and satisfaction of Allah in the other life is greater to the pious believer than anything in this life. He used to warn the owner of the gardens of Allah’s punishment and torment. The owner of the gardens told his friend disputingly: ‘Cannot you see that I have more money than you, I have plants, gardens and wealth and I have a more considerable family and tribe who will support and assist me if I call on them.’
{وَدَخَلَ جَنَّتَهُ وَهُوَ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ قَالَ مَآ أَظُنُّ أَن تَبِيدَ هَـٰذِهِ أَبَداً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 35
35. “Then the rich man, who boasted of wealth, family and tribe entered his garden to feast on its glamour, fruit and fertility. He was flattered by the world and its ornaments. He told his believing friend: ‘I do not think that this garden will ever vanish or be destroyed.’
{وَمَآ أَظُنُّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ قَائِمَةً وَلَئِن رُّدِدتُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي لأَجِدَنَّ خَيْراً مِّنْهَا مُنْقَلَباً}
{قَائِمَةً} {وَلَئِن}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 36
36. His arrogance led him to disbelieve in Allah, the afterlife and the Hour. He said that he did not think that there would be a resurrection, a return to Allah or judgment. He added that if there was judgement, resurrection and a return to Allah, he would find a better garden there because if he had not been favoured by Allah, He would not have given him this abundant wealth in this life.
{قَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُ أَكَفَرْتَ بِٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكَ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ سَوَّاكَ رَجُلاً}
{سَوَّاكَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 37
37. His believing friend warned and reprimanded him for his disbelief, impertinence and blindness. He said: ‘Do you disbelieve in Allah who created man from clay and then made his offspring from humbler liquid, and then made you a strong adult man?
{لَّٰكِنَّاْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ رَبِّي وَلاَ أُشْرِكُ بِرَبِّي أَحَداً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 38
38. “‘But I do not hold the same views as you. I accept monotheism and the supremacy of Allah; He is the only Lord there is and I do not associate anyone with Him.
{وَلَوْلاۤ إِذْ دَخَلْتَ جَنَّتَكَ قُلْتَ مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِٱللَّهِ إِن تَرَنِ أَنَاْ أَقَلَّ مِنكَ مَالاً وَوَلَداً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 39
39. “‘When you entered your gardens and were pleased with what you saw, you should have thanked Allah for His blessing to you, for the wealth and offspring. You should have said: ‘This is Allah’s will. I should never have had this without His aid.’ If you find that I am poorer and have fewer children than you,
{فعسَىٰ رَبِّي أَن يُؤْتِيَنِ خَيْراً مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَاناً مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيداً زَلَقاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 40
40. “‘May Allah reverse things and make you poor, with fewer children, and bestow on me wealth and children for my belief and faith in Him, give me a garden better than yours, take away all the blessings which He gave you because of your disbelief, lay waste your garden by sending heavy rain from heaven to destroy its plants, uproot its trees and transform it into an arid land where no plants grow.
{أَوْ يُصْبِحَ مَآؤُهَا غَوْراً فَلَن تَسْتَطِيعَ لَهُ طَلَباً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 41
41. “‘Or that its water is lost in the earth and disappears so that you cannot find it to irrigate your garden.’
{وَأُحِيطَ بِثَمَرِهِ فَأَصْبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى مَآ أَنْفَقَ فِيهَا وَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَيَقُولُ يٰلَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّي أَحَداً}
{يٰلَيْتَنِي}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 42
42. “Effectively, misfortune ravaged the fruits of his garden which he said he did not believe that they would ever perish. What his believing friend warned him of befell the garden, including destruction and loss of water in the earth. The garden became dry and arid, empty under the vines. The man beat his hands together in sorrow, regret and grief over what had beset his garden and what he had invested in it. He said: ‘I wish I had come to my senses and had not ascribed any partner to Allah.’
{وَلَمْ تَكُن لَّهُ فِئَةٌ يَنصُرُونَهُ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مُنْتَصِراً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 43
43. “He did not have among his tribe, family and children of whom he was proud, any party who could support him and prevent what Allah had willed for him to undergo. Nor could they prevent the destruction and ruin of his garden. He reflected on his garden. His forces did not serve him to ward off Allah’s vengeance.”
{هُنَالِكَ ٱلْوَلاَيَةُ لِلَّهِ ٱلْحَقِّ هُوَ خَيْرٌ ثَوَاباً وَخَيْرٌ عُقْباً}
{ٱلْوَلاَيَةُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 44
44. In undergoing such misfortunes and trials, it is only upon Allah whom one calls for help and support. In times of hardship, people resort to Allah, announcing their submission to Him and confessing that He is their Lord, and that He is the best to reward and punish. The deeds which are sincerely dedicated to Allah shall be rewarded and their doers shall be guided to the straight path.
{وَٱضْرِبْ لَهُم مَّثَلَ ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا كَمَآءٍ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاءِ فَٱخْتَلَطَ بِهِ نَبَاتُ ٱلأَرْضِ فَأَصْبَحَ هَشِيماً تَذْرُوهُ ٱلرِّياحُ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُّقْتَدِراً}
{ٱلْحَيَاةِ} {أَنْزَلْنَاهُ} {ٱلرِّياحُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 45
45. Mohammad, explain to men that life on earth is comparable in its beauty and its ephemeral nature to water which Allah sends from heaven and which allows seeds and grains to grow, become beautiful, flower and become covered with tender blossoms. The plants then dry up and turn into stubble which the winds blow and scatter in all directions. Allah is capable of everything. Earthly life offers small pleasures which soon disappear and are no more.
{ٱلْمَالُ وَٱلْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْبَاقِيَاتُ ٱلصَّالِحَاتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَاباً وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلاً}
{ٱلْحَيَاةِ} {وَٱلْبَاقِيَاتُ} {ٱلصَّالِحَاتُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 46
46. Wealth and children are the ornaments of worldly life and its pleasures. Devoting oneself to the worship of Allah and doing what is satisfactory to Him is better in the sight of Allah than wealth and children. This is because good deeds are useful to man on that day while wealth and children are of no benefit to him. Good deeds are the best hope to which man should cling to. (The prophet said: “To say, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ and ‘Allah the Great,’ are among the good enduring deeds.”) (Reported by Ahmad.)
{وَيَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ ٱلْجِبَالَ وَتَرَى ٱلأَرْضَ بَارِزَةً وَحَشَرْنَاهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَداً}
{وَحَشَرْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 47
47. Evoke, O Prophet, the great events which shall take place on the Day of Judgment: Allah Almighty will uproot the mountains from their places and send them flying in the air like clouds and then He shall make them as scattered dust; thus the mountains will vanish and the earth will be levelled and become a flat bed without detour or relief, surface or mountain. On this day, the earth will emerge with no distinctive sign, or building, or tree and no place where anyone can shelter. All creatures will appear in plain daylight before their Lord and nothing related to them will be hidden from Him. Allah Almighty will assemble all creatures, both the earlier and later, the young and old.
{وَعُرِضُواْ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفَّاً لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُمْ مَّوْعِداً}
{خَلَقْنَاكُمْ} {أَلَّن}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 48
48. On the Day of Judgment, Allah will gather together all creatures who will appear before Him in one single line. Then He will rebuke those who had denied the resurrection and afterlife and tell them: “You have come to Us as we created you at first and you thought that this would never happen. But you now know that this was due to happen.”

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 49
49. The register of deeds will be given to each. All deeds will be inscribed there, the good and the bad, the small and the great. The guilty will see all their ugly deeds counted and nothing decreased thereof. They will then know that punishment will be inflicted on them. They will become afraid and say to themselves: “Alas! O misery! We have been negligent in our lives on earth. Why does this register count all our actions and does not overlook the small or great of our sins and deeds but takes all into account?” They will find present all their deeds, both evil and good, for which they will be judged. Your Lord does not wrong anyone but judges His servants justly for their actions.

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 50
50. Almighty Allah warns the sons of Adam of the hostility which Satan has towards them and their father Adam, before them. He reprimands them for following Satan and violating the orders of the Creator. Allah tells His honourable prophet: “Recall to your people that Allah asked the angels to prostrate themselves before Adam, in acknowledgment of his kindness and as an apology for what they had said against him, notably, ‘Will you place on earth one who will do harm therein and will shed blood?’ (see chapter 2- The Baqara (The Heifer), 30). They all abided by the order of their Lord, except Satan, who was a demon. He refrained from prostrating himself and disobeyed the order of Allah. He told Allah that He had created him from fire, and that is why he would not prostrate himself to a creature which Allah had fashioned from mud; he also said that he was better than Adam. How, then, you sons of Adam, do you take this enemy and his descendants as your protecting friends instead of Allah and obey their orders, when you know that they are the enemies of Adam and his descendants? What you have done is detestable.
{مَّآ أَشْهَدتُّهُمْ خَلْقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلأَرْضِ وَلاَ خَلْقَ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمَا كُنتُ مُتَّخِذَ ٱلْمُضِلِّينَ عَضُداً}
{ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 51
51. “Those whom you took as protecting friends instead of Me (Satan and his offspring), are servants like you, who have no control over anything, and have not witnessed the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor were they present at that time, nor have I allowed them to witness the creation of one another. I am the only Creator of all things, their manager and their ruler. I would not take as supporters and allies those who stray and cannot be guided to the true path.”
{وَيَوْمَ يَقُولُ نَادُواْ شُرَكَآئِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُواْ لَهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُم مَّوْبِقاً}
{شُرَكَآئِيَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 52
52. And also recall, O Prophet, to your people what will happen on the Day of Assembly (Day of Resurrection) when Allah will publicly rebuke and vituperate the polytheists, saying: “Today you can call upon those whom you claimed in the worldly life were My partners in lordship, in the creation and management of this universe.” They will then call on them but the others will not respond and they will find that there is no way to reach their divinities, for Allah will have made between the ones and the others destructions and perils.
{وَرَأَى ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ ٱلنَّارَ فَظَنُّوۤاْ أَنَّهُمْ مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُواْ عَنْهَا مَصْرِفاً}
{وَرَأَى}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 53
53. When the unbelievers see with their own eyes the fire of hell flaming, they shall be convinced that they will be precipitated headlong into it and that they will have no means of escape because Allah would have decided this and because the fire would surround them on all sides. (To see the fire and to be convinced that he will be undoubtedly precipitated into it is in itself a terrible punishment for the unbeliever.)
{وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِي هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْآنِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ وَكَانَ ٱلإِنْسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلاً}
{ٱلْقُرْآنِ} {ٱلإِنْسَانُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 54
54. Almighty Allah says that in the Quran He has informed the people everything they need to know concerning matters of religion and life. He says that He has dealt with these matters in detail so that men should not be misled from the truth and thus stray from the path of virtue and guidance, and so that they remember to turn to their Lord, consider, and abstain from their persistence in polytheism and wrong-doing. However, in spite of this demonstration, the unbelievers requested other miracles than the Quran. Except for those who are guided by Allah, man naturally likes to argue and to oppose right with wrong.
{وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوۤاْ إِذْ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّهُمْ إِلاَّ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ قُبُلاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 55
55. What prevented those infidels from believing in Allah, His prophets and His books after having received clear signs and become aware of the truth of your message, and from asking the forgiveness of their Lord for the guilt they had committed and mending their ways, was their stubbornness which made some of them ask to witness the punishment which Allah had threatened them with. They said: “Oh Lord, if this is a truth coming from You, let stones rain on us from heavens or bring us painful punishment.” See chapter 8- Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War), 32. This incited others to ask that you inflict on them all kinds of torture and calamities in this life, one succeeding the other, and that they see this punishment with their own eyes; or that they should be beset with the fate of their ancestors, notably the total annihilation which the people of Noah, Aad, Thamoud and Lot underwent.
{وَمَا نُرْسِلُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلاَّ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَيُجَٰدِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُواْ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ وَٱتَّخَذُوۤاْ ءَايَٰتِي وَمَآ أُنْذِرُواْ هُزُواً}
{وَيُجَادِلُ} {بِٱلْبَاطِلِ} {آيَاتِي}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 56
56. Almighty Allah answers them saying that He only sends messengers to bear the good news; whoever believes them and believes in their message will be rewarded by Allah. He also sends them to warn those who deny and contradict them of Allah’s punishment and torture. Allah adds that He does not send messengers so that the iniquitous among their people should ask them to produce miracles and all that they are incapable of doing. The iniquitous unbelievers do not argue and ask for signs so that they can be guided to follow the true path. Rather they evolve false arguments to weaken the truth which the messengers reveal to them and to render it ineffective. However, they will never attain their aim. They have mocked all the arguments and miracles which their messengers produced for them, and scoffed at the punishment which they have warned them against and frightened them with.
{وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِآيَٰتِ رَبِّهِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِيَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِي ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْراً وَإِن تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَىٰ ٱلْهُدَىٰ فَلَنْ يَهْتَدُوۤاْ إِذاً أَبَداً}
{بِآيَٰتِ} {آذَانِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 57
57. None of Allah’s creatures is more evil than he who has been reminded of the revelations of his Lord which serve to guide him to the straight path but turned away and did not meditate on them. He ignored them and did not contemplate on the consequences of his iniquity, disbelief and disobedience and thus did not return to Allah in repentance, begging for His pardon. The unbelievers turn away from what they have been reminded of because Allah has covered their hearts with a veil so that they could not understand, and has stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Therefore, they are insensible to your call to them, O Mohammad, to follow the true path and to have faith in Allah and His revelations to His messenger. They will not respond to it.
{وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ذُو ٱلرَّحْمَةِ لَوْ يُؤَاخِذُهُم بِمَا كَسَبُواْ لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ بَل لَّهُم مَّوْعِدٌ لَّن يَجِدُواْ مِن دُونِهِ مَوْئِلاً}
{مَوْئِلاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 58
58. Your Lord is Allah the Pardoner, the Merciful, who grants people a period of grace so that they may repent, believe and ask for forgiveness from their Lord and in order that He may forgive them, have mercy on them and forgo their sins. If He were to punish them for their sins, He would have hastened their doom and destroyed them. However, He has appointed a certain time from which there is no escape for them from Him and from which they cannot turn away.
{وَتِلْكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُواْ وَجَعَلْنَا لِمَهْلِكِهِم مَّوْعِداً}
{أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 59
59. Allah destroyed previous nations, namely Aad, Thamoud and the peoples of Noah, Lot and Aikah. He destroyed their towns due to their disbelief and stubbornness and appointed a fixed time for their destruction which can neither be retarded nor advanced. Therefore be warned you unbelievers, that you will be afflicted with a similar punishment if you continue to deny your prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).
{وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَٰهُ لاۤ أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُباً}
{لِفَتَاهُ لاۤ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 60
60. Moses (peace be upon him) was told that there was a servant of Allah at the point where two seas meet, who had knowledge which he did not possess. Thus Moses wished to go to see him and to hear him speak. He told his page: “It is said that he is Yousha ibn Noun and he is a descendant of Joseph’s. I will walk until I reach the point where the two seas meet to encounter the man, even if I have to walk for a long time.”
{فَلَمَّا بَلَغَا مَجْمَعَ بَيْنِهِمَا نَسِيَا حُوتَهُمَا فَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ فِي ٱلْبَحْرِ سَرَباً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 61
61. Moses (peace be upon him) was told that he should take a salted fish with him and that there where he lost the fish, he would find the learned man. He walked with his servant till they came to the meeting point of the two seas. The fish fell into the water and began to swim, cutting through it and leaving behind it a kind of channel.
{فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتَٰهُ آتِنَا غَدَآءَنَا لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِن سَفَرِنَا هَـٰذَا نَصَباً}
{لِفَتَاهُ} {آتِنَا}

{أَرَأَيْتَ} {أَنْسَانِيهُ} {ٱلشَّيْطَانُ}

The fish found its way into the water in an unusual and extraordinary way considering that it was a dead fish. However it cut through the water, leaving a trail like a channel or a fissure in the earth.”
{قَالَ ذَلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِ فَٱرْتَدَّا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمَا قَصَصاً}
{آثَارِهِمَا}

{فَوَجَدَا عَبْداً مِّنْ عِبَادِنَآ آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْماً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 65
65. Moses and his page found a reclining man in white at the rock. Moses approached him. The man said to Moses: “The people of your land do not know how to greet.” Almighty Allah said that He had given the man some of His grace and taught him of His knowledge.

{قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْراً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 67

{قَالَ سَتَجِدُنِيۤ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ صَابِراً وَلاَ أَعْصِي لَكَ أمْراً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 69
69. Moses said: “If Allah wills, you will find me patient in matters that I shall witness; I will not disobey any order of yours and will not oppose you in anything.”
{قَالَ فَإِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتَنِي فَلاَ تَسْأَلْني عَن شَيءٍ حَتَّىٰ أُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْراً}
{تَسْأَلْني}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 70
70. The man told Moses: “If you want to follow me, do not ask about any of my actions which seem strange and incomprehensible to you until I talk to you about them and explain them to you.”
{فَٱنْطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَكِبَا فِي ٱلسَّفِينَةِ خَرَقَهَا قَالَ أَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ أَهْلَهَا لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئاً إِمْراً}

When the ship had set sail, the good man made a hole in the ship by removing one of its planks. This, he replaced with another board. The ship then appeared as if it had been patched. Moses could not refrain from inquiring indignantly: “By making a hole in the ship you risk drowning its passengers. You have committed a dreadful and amazing thing.”
{قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْراً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 72

{فَٱنْطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا لَقِيَا غُلاَماً فَقَتَلَهُ قَالَ أَقَتَلْتَ نَفْساً زَكِيَّةً بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ لَّقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئاً نُّكْراً}
{غُلاَماً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 74
74. After they had gone ashore, they continued on their way. They found a lad in one of the villages playing with other boys of the same age. The good man took the lad aside and killed him. Moses denounced this act and told the good man: “By slaying an innocent soul, you have committed a reprehensible act, that is unaccepted by reason. There was no legitimate motive for your deed, such as killing in retaliation for a murder committed.”
{قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَّكَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْراً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 75
75. The man reminded Moses of what he had promised at the beginning of the journey, notably that Moses would be patient through what he witnessed the great man do and would not contest his actions before knowing the hidden reasons for them.
{قَالَ إِن سَأَلْتُكَ عَن شَيْءٍ بَعْدَهَا فَلاَ تُصَٰحِبْنِي قَدْ بَلَغْتَ مِن لَّدُنِّي عُذْراً}
{تُصَاحِبْنِي}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 76
76. Moses told him: “If I object to anything from now on, do not keep company with me because you have already taken me to task time after time.”
{فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَآ أَتَيَآ أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ أَهْلَهَا فَأَبَوْاْ أَن يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِيهَا جِدَاراً يُرِيدُ أَن يَنقَضَّ فَأَقَامَهُ قَالَ لَوْ شِئْتَ لَتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَجْراً}
{لَتَّخَذْتَ}

As they walked in the village, they came upon a wall which was beginning to crumble. The good man repaired and reinforced it. Moses told him that the people of the village had not fed them and that he should therefore not have carried out any work without claiming payment for it.
{قَالَ هَـٰذَا فِرَاقُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنِكَ سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْراً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 78
78. The man told Moses: “When I killed the lad, you stipulated that I should not keep company with you if you asked me about anything which I myself did not furnish you with an explanation for. Therefore I will part with you; but I will explain those acts I committed which horrified you and with which you would not bear patiently.
{أَمَّا ٱلسَّفِينَةُ فَكَانَتْ لِمَسَاكِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ فِي ٱلْبَحْرِ فَأَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَعِيبَهَا وَكَانَ وَرَآءَهُم مَّلِكٌ يَأْخُذُ كُلَّ سَفِينَةٍ غَصْباً}
{لِمَسَاكِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 79
79. The good man then began to explain the reasons which led him to make a hole in the ship. He said that he had made a hole in the ship to cause a defect in it, because on their way, they would pass through the lands of a tyrant king who took all ships which were in a good and serviceable state by force. Thus, causing a fault in the ship would save it from the harm of this tyrant king. The ship, he said, was owned by poor people to whom it was the only means of livelihood.
{وَأَمَّا ٱلْغُلاَمُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِينَآ أَن يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَاناً وَكُفْراً}
{ٱلْغُلاَمُ} {طُغْيَاناً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 80
80. As for the lad whom he had killed, the man said that he was inclined to disbelief while his parents were good believers. He feared that their love for their son would make them follow him which would lead them to disbelief and eventually to destruction.
{فَأَرَدْنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْراً مِّنْهُ زَكَـاةً وَأَقْرَبَ رُحْماً}
{زَكَـاةً}

{وَأَمَّا ٱلْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلاَمَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِي ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُ كَنزٌ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحاً فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن يَبْلُغَآ أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِي ذَلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِـع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْراً}
{لِغُلاَمَيْنِ} {صَالِحاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 82
82. As for the wall which the pious man had rebuilt and fortified without claiming payment for it, it belonged to two orphan boys in the village whose father was a righteous man. Under the wall that was about to collapse, there was a buried treasure about which no one knew. If the wall collapsed while the two boys were still young, the treasure would be lost and they would not benefit from it. Therefore, Allah had inspired him to build the wall to protect the treasure underneath it until the two boys become strong adults and were capable of taking it out and benefiting from it. The good man added by saying that what he had done in the three cases was due to the mercy of Allah on the owners of the ship, the parents of the boy he had killed, and the two orphans. He said that he had not acted thus on his own initiative but upon Allah’s command and His inspiration. Then he concluded by saying that this was the hidden meaning of the actions that Moses could not bear patiently with.
{وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَن ذِي ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ قُلْ سَأَتْلُواْ عَلَيْكُم مِّنْهُ ذِكْراً}
{وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ} {سَأَتْلُواْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 83
83. Incited by the Jews, the people of Quraish will ask you, O Mohammad, about Dhul-Qarnayn (the one with two horns). Tell them: “I will recite to you his story as my Lord informed me of it.” (No one knows who Dhul-Qarnayn mentioned in this story is. In any case, Dhul-Qarnayn mentioned in this verse is a believer who knew Allah and obeyed His orders.)
{إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ وَآتَيْنَاهُ مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ سَبَباً}
{وَآتَيْنَاهُ}

{فَأَتْبَعَ سَبَباً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 85
85. He wished to attain the West and followed a way to take him there.
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِي عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْماً قُلْنَا يٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّآ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّآ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْناً}
{يٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ}

He saw the sun setting in the sea as into a black muddy spring. He found at the place where he had reached a nation of disbelieving people. Allah revealed to him by inspiration to either kill them if they did not acknowledge the Oneness of Allah or to command that they be taught the way of guidance which leads to the straight path and to be made aware of the provisions of the divine precepts and laws.
{قَالَ أَمَّا مَن ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ عَذَاباً نُّكْراً}

Then when he returned to his Lord on the Day of Judgment, Allah would inflict on him, awful and painful punishment.
{وَأَمَّا مَنْ آمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحاً فَلَهُ جَزَآءً ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِنَا يُسْراً}
{آمَنَ} {صَالِحاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 88
88. “As for the person who follows our call to the worship of Allah alone without associate, he shall have a good reward in the afterlife in recognition of his belief and good work. We shall treat him kindly in this life and attempt to teach him what we can to make it possible for him to come closer to his Lord and have his heart softened without hardship.”
{ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَباً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 89
89. Then he returned and took the road leading from West to East.
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُمْ مِّن دُونِهَا سِتْراً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 90
90. When he reached the most extreme point in the east, that could be reached by a traveller (the point where the sun rises), he found that the sun rose on a people who had no home and no trees to shelter them from the heat of the sun. These people would hide underground during the day to protect themselves from the heat of the sun and its glare. They would come out from their shelters at night to earn their living.
{كَذَلِكَ وَقَدْ أَحَطْنَا بِمَا لَدَيْهِ خُبْراً}

92. Then he followed a third road, cross-wise from the East of the earth to the North.
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْماً لاَّ يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 93
93. Until he reached a valley between two mountains (a valley between two parallel mountains from which the people of Gog and Magog spread to the lands of the Turks where they disseminated evil and destroyed cultivation and offspring). There he found a people who could hardly understand any human tongue because their language was incomprehensible to others and because they lacked intelligence, or they would have understood his message by indication and from the context.
{قَالُواْ يٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجاً عَلَىٰ أَن تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدّاً}
{يٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ}

94. They said: “O Dhul-Qarnayn , the people of Gog and Magog are corrupting the land and spreading evil, killing and destroying. Will you accept that we pay you so that you can build a wall to prevent them from reaching us?”
{قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّي فِيهِ رَبِّي خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِي بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْماً}
Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 95
95. Dhul-Qarnayn said to them: “Allah has given me wealth and power, and He strengthened me on earth. That is better than what you offer me and which I do not need. But assist me through your work and your construction equipment so I can build between you and Gog and Magog an insurmountable wall and a strong protective barrier.
{آتُونِي زُبَرَ ٱلْحَدِيدِ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَيْنَ ٱلصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ ٱنفُخُواْ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَعَلَهُ نَاراً قَالَ آتُونِيۤ أُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْراً}
{آتُونِي}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 96
96. He said: “Give me ingots of iron.” They gave them to him. He then began to place them one over the other, starting at the foundation and going upwards until the iron work rose to the height of the mountains and spanned the breadth between them on either side. He then set them on fire. When the iron was white hot, he told them to bring him molten copper which he poured on the glowing iron. The wall became one solid block.
{فَمَا ٱسْطَاعُوۤاْ أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا ٱسْتَطَاعُواْ لَهُ نَقْباً}
{ٱسْطَاعُوۤاْ} {ٱسْتَطَاعُواْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 97
97. The people of Gog and Magog were not able to climb over the wall due to its height and smoothness. Neither could they pierce it because it was strong and thick.
{قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَحْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّي فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّي جَعَلَهُ دَكَّآءَ وَكَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّي حَقّاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 98
98. When Dhul-Qarnayn had finished building the wall, he said: “This wall is a mercy from Allah to the people, for it prevented Gog and Magog from destroying and corrupting the earth. When Allah’s true promise is realized, and the time comes for Gog and Magog to withdraw from the wall, Allah Almighty Will demolish the wall and level it to the ground. Thus Allah’s promise is ineluctably realized.
{وَتَرَكْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَمُوجُ فِي بَعْضٍ وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَجَمَعْنَاهُمْ جَمْعاً}
{يَوْمَئِذٍ} {فَجَمَعْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 99
99. And on the day when Allah will lay low the wall, those people will come out and sweep down onto the land harming the wealth of men and damaging their property. When the time for Last Judgement arrives, the angel will sound his trumpet. Allah will gather all men to judge them for their deeds.
{وَعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْكَافِرِينَ عَرْضاً}
{يَوْمَئِذٍ} {لِّلْكَافِرِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 100
100. On that day when the trumpet is blown, Allah will show Hell to the unbelievers, making it visible to them to see the horrors there before He hurls them into it. This will increase their anguish, distress and suffering.
{ٱلَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِي غِطَآءٍ عَن ذِكْرِي وَكَانُواْ لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 101
101. And those unbelievers who deserved punishment, are those who have neglected accepting guidance and following truth. They did not understand the precepts of Allah and His prohibitions.
{أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوۤاْ أَن يَتَّخِذُواْ عِبَادِي مِن دُونِيۤ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَافِرِينَ نُزُلاً}
{لِلْكَافِرِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 102
102. Did those who disbelieved in Me, who worshipped instead of Me, My servants who are subject to My power such as the angels, Jesus and Ezra, imagine that those would benefit them on Judgement Day? They will be of no use to them and will not save them from punishment or from the terrors and horrors which will beset them. We have reserved and prepared hell for these unbelievers to be their dwelling place.
{قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِٱلأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالاً}
{أَعْمَالاً}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 103
103. Say, O Prophet, to those people of the Book who dispute fruitlessly with you: “Do you want me to inform you who will be the greatest loser in deeds? They are those who worshipped Allah in a way other than that accepted by Him. They thought that they were in the right and that their actions would be accepted. In fact, they are misguided and deceived. Their works will be rejected.”
{ٱلَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعاً}
{ٱلْحَيَاةِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 104
104. Almighty Allah interprets the meaning of the ‘greatest losers in deeds’ which appears in the previous verse. He indicates them saying: “They are those who committed forbidden deeds in His divine laws believing that they were following by this the path of truth and guidance, that they were accepted and loved by Allah and that their works were good and acceptable to Allah.
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَلِقَائِهِ فَحَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فَلاَ نُقِيمُ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ وَزْناً}
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ} {بِآيَاتِ} {وَلِقَائِهِ} {أَعْمَالُهُمْ} {ٱلْقِيَامَةِ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 105
105. “They are those who were ungrateful and disbelieved in the revelations of their Lord in this life, contested the arguments, evidence, and proof which He furnished for His Oneness, the truth of His messengers and disbelieved in the afterlife and last judgment. Therefore, their works are in vain; they will weigh nothing on Judgement Day. They will have no good work to tip the scales in their favour on the Day of Judgment because they have done no pious work. Only pious works are heavy on the scales.” (The prophet said: “A great tall man will appear before Allah on the Day of Judgment and he will weigh not more than a wing of a mosquito.” Reported by Al-Bukhari.)
{ذَلِكَ جَزَآؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُواْ وَٱتَّخَذُوۤاْ آيَاتِي وَرُسُلِي هُزُواً}
{آيَاتِي}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 106
106. To reward them for their works, Allah will inflict on them the punishment of hellfire. Allah imposes this punishment on them by reason of their disbelief and their derision of Allah’s signs, messengers and warnings. They mocked and strongly denied His messengers.
{إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلاً}
{آمَنُواْ} {ٱلصَّالِحَاتِ} {جَنَّاتُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 107
107. As for those happy faithful who believed in Allah, and His envoys and their messages, and did good works acceptable to Him, their reward will be Paradise where streams flow and where they will remain. (The prophet said: “Paradise-Firdaus is a part of paradise and it is the middle and best part.’ Reported by Ibn Jareer.)
{خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا لاَ يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلاً}
{خَالِدِينَ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 108
108. They will stay there forever, will not move from it. Nor will they have the desire to choose an alternative to it or accept another place instead of it.
{قُل لَّوْ كَانَ ٱلْبَحْرُ مِدَاداً لِّكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ ٱلْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَبِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَداً}
{لِّكَلِمَاتِ} {كَلِمَاتُ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 109
109. Say, O Mohammad: “If the water of the sea were all ink to write the words of Allah, His precepts and signs which prove His existence, the water of the sea would be used up before you had finished writing, even if other seas supplied it.”
{قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَاْ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَـٰهُكُمْ إِلَـٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُواْ لِقَآءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلاً صَالِحاً وَلاَ يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَداً}
{وَاحِدٌ} {صَالِحاً} {يَرْجُواْ}

Surah Al-Kahf: Verse 110
110. “Say, O Mohammad, to those polytheists who denied your message: ‘I am only a mortal like you. Whoever claims that I am a liar should bring forth the same message. In telling you in a manner that conforms with the reality of the authentic stories of the past which you asked me about, I ignored the mysteries which envelop such stories as those of the people of the cave and of Dhul-Qarnayn. Had not Allah, my Lord, revealed them to me, I would not have known them.
I am informing you that your Lord, whom I invite you to worship, is One without partner. Whoever hopes for Allah’s retribution (‘the meeting with His Lord’) and His good reward in the next life, should do good pious work according to the laws of Allah and only aspire by this to please Him. (Doing acts which conform to the Divine law and aspiring to please Allah are the two principal pillars of the pious works which Allah accepts.)
