Al-Haadi
The Guide
Al-Haadi is the One who gives guidance to His believers, a guidance that benefits them and protects them from harm. It reaches people through two means: the Quran, and the prophets ending with Muhammad ﷺ. Sufficient is your Lord as a Guide, says 25:31.

﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِىٍّ عَدُوًّا مِّنَ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ هَادِيًا وَنَصِيرًا﴾Similarly, We made enemies for every prophet from among the wicked, but sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and Helper.

Allah SWT is Al Haadi (in Arabic: ٱلْهَادِي), The One who gives guidance to His believers. His Guidance is beneficial and protects them from whatever may be harmful. He is The One who sent prophets (may peace be upon them) as the deliverers of His message to ensure mankind is guided on the right path.
Guidance is sent through two means. The primary source for guidance is the literal word of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ, and that is the Qur'an. The second form of guidance was given through His Prophets and the last Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. We study and learn from the Prophetic traditions (what he said and consistently did or encouraged). This is captured through his companions and is mentioned in the hadith book collections.
الله سبحانه وتعالى هو الهادي، الذي يهدي المؤمنين، وهدايته نافعة تحميهم مما قد يضرهم. وهو الذي أرسل الأنبياء عليهم السلام مبلغين لرسالته، ليهتدي الناس إلى الطريق المستقيم.
وتأتي الهداية بطريقين: الأول كلام الله سبحانه وتعالى، وهو القرآن، والثاني ما جاء به أنبياؤه وخاتمهم محمد ﷺ. ونتعلم من السنة النبوية ما قاله وداوم عليه أو حث عليه، وقد نقلها أصحابه، وهي في كتب الحديث.
Sufficient as a Guide and Helper
25:31 was said to the Prophet ﷺ as comfort. Every prophet before him had enemies among the wicked, al-Sa'di explains, people who opposed and argued with falsehood. Then the verse names what is enough against them. As a Guide, your Lord guides you, so you reach what you seek and the good of your religion and your world. As a Helper, He helps you against your enemies and turns away from you everything hateful.
Arabic: وكفى بربك هاديا ونصيرا
نزلت الآية تسلية للنبي ﷺ، قال السعدي: «قال الله مسليا لرسوله ومخبرا أن هؤلاء الخلق لهم سلف صنعوا كصنيعهم»، فلكل نبي عدو من المجرمين «يعارضونهم ويردون عليهم ويجادلونهم بالباطل». ثم ذكرت ما يكفيه: ﴿وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ هَادِيًا﴾: «يهديك فيحصل لك المطلوب ومصالح دينك ودنياك»، ﴿وَنَصِيرًا﴾: «ينصرك على أعدائك ويدفع عنك كل مكروه».
Its Form, Then Its Way
﴿قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلْقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ﴾He answered, “Our Lord is the One Who has given everything its ˹distinctive˺ form, then guided ˹it˺.”
When Pharaoh asked who their Lord was, Musa answered with 20:50. Al-Sa'di calls the second half a general guidance that can be seen in every creature. Each one was guided to what it was made for, so you find it working toward its benefit and away from harm, and even the animals were given enough sense for that. The One who gives each thing its form and then its way, he concludes, is the Lord in truth.
Arabic: أعطى كل شيء خلقه ثم هدى
سأل فرعون موسى عن ربه، فأجابه: ﴿رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلْقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ﴾. قال السعدي في الشطر الثاني: «كل مخلوق إلى ما خلقه له، وهذه الهداية العامة المشاهدة في جميع المخلوقات فكل مخلوق، تجده يسعى لما خلق له من المنافع، وفي دفع المضار عنه، حتى إن الله تعالى أعطى الحيوان البهيم من العقل، ما يتمكن به»، ثم قال: «فالذي خلق المخلوقات، وأعطاها خلقها الحسن، الذي لا تقترح العقول فوق حسنه، وهداها لمصالحها، هو الرب على الحقيقة».
Two Kinds of Guidance
﴿إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِى مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ﴾You surely cannot guide whoever you like ˹O Prophet˺, but it is Allah Who guides whoever He wills, and He knows best who are ˹fit to be˺ guided.
28:56 tells the Prophet ﷺ that he cannot guide whoever he loves, and 42:52 tells him that he guides to a straight path. Al-Sa'di explains that the two speak of different things. Guidance of success, placing faith in a heart, is beyond any creature and is in Allah's hand alone. The guidance the Prophet ﷺ gives is explanation and direction: he makes the path clear and calls people to it. The two means named above, the Quran and the Prophets, are that second kind, and the first is Allah's.
Arabic: هداية التوفيق وهداية البيان
قال تعالى للنبي ﷺ: ﴿إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِى مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ﴾، وقال: ﴿وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ﴾. قال السعدي: «فإن هذا أمر غير مقدور للخلق هداية للتوفيق، وخلق الإيمان في القلب، وإنما ذلك بيد اللّه سبحانه تعالى»، وأما هداية الرسول: «فتلك هداية البيان والإرشاد، فالرسول يبين الصراط المستقيم، ويرغب فيه». والطريقان المذكوران أعلاه، القرآن والأنبياء، من هداية البيان، وهداية التوفيق لله وحده.
Seek Guidance From Me
﴿ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ﴾Guide us along the Straight Path,
Every rak'ah of prayer asks for this Name's gift in 1:6: guide us along the Straight Path. In a hadith qudsi Allah tells His servants why the request is needed: “O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you” (Sahih Muslim 2577). The Prophet ﷺ used to ask for it first among four things: “O Allah. I beg of Thee the right guidance, safeguard against evils, chastity and freedom from want” (Sahih Muslim 2721).
Arabic: فاستهدوني أهدكم
يسأل المصلي هذه الهداية في كل ركعة: ﴿ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ﴾. وفي الحديث القدسي: «يَا عِبَادِي كُلُّكُمْ ضَالٌّ إِلاَّ مَنْ هَدَيْتُهُ فَاسْتَهْدُونِي أَهْدِكُمْ» (صحيح مسلم 2577). وكان النبي ﷺ يقدمها في دعائه: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى» (صحيح مسلم 2721).
Guided Hearts
﴿مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُۥ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ﴾No calamity befalls ˹anyone˺ except by Allah’s Will. And whoever has faith in Allah, He will ˹rightly˺ guide their hearts ˹through adversity˺. And Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
64:11 promises guidance in a place people do not expect it, in a calamity. Whoever believes it came from Allah, al-Sa'di says, and accepts it and submits to His decree, Allah guides his heart, so it settles and is not shaken. 29:69 gives a second door: those who strive for Him will be guided to His ways. Al-Sa'di includes seeking sacred knowledge, and says the one who strives in it is given guidance and help beyond what his own effort could reach.
Arabic: يهد قلبه
تعد آية التغابن بالهداية في المصيبة: ﴿وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُۥ﴾، قال السعدي: «فإذا آمن أنها من عند الله، فرضي بذلك، وسلم لأمره، هدى الله قلبه، فاطمأن ولم ينزعج عند المصائب». وآية العنكبوت باب آخر: ﴿وَٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا﴾، قال السعدي: «وعلى أن من جد واجتهد في طلب العلم الشرعي، فإنه يحصل له من الهداية والمعونة على تحصيل مطلوبه أمور إلهية، خارجة عن مدرك اجتهاده».
From the Sunnah
O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you
يَا عِبَادِي كُلُّكُمْ ضَالٌّ إِلاَّ مَنْ هَدَيْتُهُ فَاسْتَهْدُونِي أَهْدِكُمْ
used to supplicate (in these words):" O Allah. I beg of Thee the right guidance, safeguard against evils, chastity and freedom from want
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Questions about Al-Haadi
What does Al-Haadi mean?
Al-Haadi is the One who guides His believers, with a guidance that brings them benefit and keeps harm away from them.
Where does the Quran call Allah a Guide?
In 25:31: sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and Helper. And 22:54 says that Allah surely guides the believers to the Straight Path.
Can anyone guide another person?
Only by explaining and calling, al-Sa'di says on 28:56. Putting faith into a heart belongs to Allah alone; even the Prophet ﷺ could not guide whoever he loved.
