Why Do We Need the Quran, and Why Is It the Eternal Miracle?
لماذا نحتاج إلى القرآن؟ ولماذا كان القرآن المعجزة الخالدة؟
If the simple and man-made machine needs a manual that teaches us how to use it optimally, then man, whom Allah the Almighty has created, needs for a greater reason, a book of guidance that guides to the path of success, prosperity, and goodness in this world and the Hereafter. Allah the Almighty says: (How could He not know His Own creation? For He ˹alone˺ is the Most Subtle, All-Aware.) [Al-Mulk 67:14]
The Quran is a miracle, because Prophet Muhammad is the last of the Prophets, and so his miracle should continue and be immortal since there is no prophet after him. Hence, the proof against the creation should last till the Day of Resurrection. With the Noble Quran, Allah the Almighty challenged the Arabs, for they were the best in eloquence, but both mankind and jinn were unable to come up with something similar to the Quran. Allah the Almighty says: (Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “If ˹all˺ humans and jinn were to come together to produce the equivalent of this Quran, they could not produce its equal, no matter how they supported each other.”) [Al-Isra 17:88] This shows that the Quran comes from the Lord.
إذا كانت الآلة البسيطة والتي من صنع الإنسان تحتاج إلى كتيب إرشادي يعلمنا كيف نستخدمها الاستخدام الأمثل، فالإنسان والذي هو من صنع الله من باب أولى يحتاج إلى كتاب هداية وإرشاد يعلمه طريق النجاح والفلاح والصلاح في الدنيا والآخرة، قال الله تعالى: (أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ) [الملك 67: 14]
وكون القرآن معجزة لأن النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم هو خاتم الأنبياء، وعليه فلا بد أن تستمر معجزته وتكون خالدة، لأن لا نبي بعده، فيجب أن تبقى الحجة على الخلق قائمة إلى قيام الساعة، وهو الذي تحدى الله به العرب الذين هم رواد البيان والفصاحة، وقد عجز الإنس والجن عن أن يأتوا بمثل هذا القرآن، قال الله تعالى: (قُل لَّئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَىٰ أَن يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا) [الإسراء 17: 88]
وفي هذا دلالة على مصدرية القرآن الربانية.
1. Does the Creator Not Know His Creation? | ألا يعلم من خلق
The scholar’s comparison with a machine and its manual rests on the verse: How could He not know His Own creation? For He alone is the Most Subtle, All-Aware (67:14). Ibn Kathir explains: does the Creator not know? He mentions another reading, does Allah not know what He created?, and prefers the first because the verse ends with the Most Subtle, All-Aware. The One who made man knows best what guides him, and the earlier books are explained in the divine books revealed to the messengers.
أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ (سورة الملك: 14)
قال تعالى: (ألا يعلم من خلق وهو اللطيف الخبير) (الملك 67: 14)، قال ابن كثير: أي: ألا يعلم الخالق؟ وقيل: معناه ألا يعلم الله مخلوقه؟ والأول أولى، لقوله: (وهو اللطيف الخبير).
2. Humans and Jinn Together Could Not Produce Its Like | لا يأتون بمثله
Allah says: Say, If all humans and jinn were to come together to produce the equivalent of this Quran, they could not produce its equal, no matter how they supported each other (17:88). Ibn Kathir explains that Allah draws attention to the honour of this great Quran: if all humans and jinn gathered and agreed to bring the like of what He revealed to His Messenger, they could not, even if they helped and backed one another, for how could the speech of creatures resemble the speech of the Creator, who has no equal and no likeness?
قُل لَّئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَىٰ أَن يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا (سورة الإسراء: 88)
قال تعالى: (قل لئن اجتمعت الإنس والجن على أن يأتوا بمثل هذا القرآن لا يأتون بمثله ولو كان بعضهم لبعض ظهيرا) (الإسراء 17: 88)، قال ابن كثير: ثم نبه تعالى على شرف هذا القرآن العظيم، فأخبر أنه لو اجتمعت الإنس والجن كلهم واتفقوا على أن يأتوا بمثل ما أنزله على رسوله لما أطاقوا ذلك ولما استطاعوه، ولو تعاونوا وتساعدوا وتظافروا، فإن هذا أمر لا يستطاع، وكيف يشبه كلام المخلوقين كلام الخالق الذي لا نظير له ولا مثال له ولا عديل له؟
3. Bring a Single Surah Like It | فأتوا بسورة من مثله
The challenge goes down to one surah: And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a surah like it and call your helpers other than Allah, if what you say is true (2:23). Ibn Kathir explains that after establishing that there is no god but He, Allah establishes the prophethood: bring a surah like what he brought, if you claim it is from other than Allah, and call on whomever you wish besides Allah, for you will not be able to; Ibn Abbas said that your helpers means those who would assist you.
وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ (سورة البقرة: 23)
قال تعالى: (وإن كنتم في ريب مما نزلنا على عبدنا فأتوا بسورة من مثله وادعوا شهداءكم من دون الله إن كنتم صادقين) (البقرة 2: 23)، قال ابن كثير: ثم شرع تعالى في تقرير النبوة بعد أن قرر أنه لا إله إلا هو، فقال مخاطبا للكافرين: (فأتوا بسورة) من مثل ما جاء به إن زعمتم أنه من عند غير الله، فعارضوه بمثل ما جاء به، واستعينوا على ذلك بمن شئتم من دون الله، فإنكم لا تستطيعون ذلك، قال ابن عباس: (شهداءكم) أعوانكم.
4. The Miracle That Remains | وإنما كان الذي أوتيت وحيا
The scholar explains that the Quran is the lasting miracle because no prophet comes after Muhammad. The Prophet said: There was no prophet but was given signs because of which people believed, and what I was given is revelation that Allah revealed to me, so I hope to have the most followers of them on the Day of Resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari 4981). Allah describes it: It cannot be proven false from any angle. It is a revelation from the One Who is All-Wise, Praiseworthy (41:42), and Ibn Kathir explains: falsehood has no way to it, because it is sent down from the Lord of the worlds. لَّا يَأْتِيهِ الْبَاطِلُ مِن بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ ۖ تَنزِيلٌ مِّنْ حَكِيمٍ حَمِيدٍ (سورة فصلت: 42)
قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "ما من الأنبياء نبي إلا أعطي ما مثله آمن عليه البشر، وإنما كان الذي أوتيت وحيا أوحاه الله إلي، فأرجو أن أكون أكثرهم تابعا يوم القيامة" (صحيح البخاري 4981)، وقال تعالى: (لا يأتيه الباطل من بين يديه ولا من خلفه تنزيل من حكيم حميد) (فصلت 41: 42)، قال ابن كثير: أي: ليس للبطلان إليه سبيل؛ لأنه منزل من رب العالمين.
