What Are the Miracles of the Prophet (PBUH)?
The Holy Qur’an: It is the miracle that remains until Judgement Day, and its wonders never run out. All the miracles apart from the Qur’an have ended and disappeared with the passing of their cause and time, and the Qur’an still astonishes the human soul with the scientific and legislative miracles it contains.
● The splitting of the moon, the moon split during the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and this splitting was witnessed by many crowds of Quraysh.
● Israa and Miraj: It is the one in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was taken by night from Mecca to Jerusalem, then ascended to heaven, and then to Sidrat al-Muntaha. Allah the Almighty said:
( Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muḥammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.) Al-Israa
● Healing the blind, the leper and the sick: such as his healing of Qatadah’s eye when it fell onto his cheek, after which he saw with it better than with his other eye, and his healing of the eye of Ali ibn Abi Talib at the Battle of Khaybar.
● Understanding the language of animals: his understanding of what the camel said when he entered the garden of a man from the Ansar, as is established from Abdullah ibn Ja’far: (There was a camel, and when it saw the Prophet (ﷺ), it yearned and its eyes shed tears. The Prophet (ﷺ) came to it and wiped over the camel, and said: “Who is the owner of this camel? Whose camel is this?” A young man from the Ansar came and said: “It is mine, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Do you not fear Allah regarding this beast which Allah has given into your possession? It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and wear it out.”) Narrated by Abu Dawud (2549) and graded sahih by al-Albani.
Note: The earlier published wording named the narrator Ja’far ibn Abi Talib and gave the source as “narrated by al-Albani”. The hadith is in Sunan Abi Dawud (2549) from his son Abdullah ibn Ja’far, and al-Albani graded it sahih, so it was corrected.
● The mountain obeyed his command: when he stood on Mount Uhud with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, the mountain trembled, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Be firm, Uhud, for on you are only a Prophet, a Siddiq and two martyrs” (narrated by al-Bukhari, 3675), and the mountain became firm.
Note: The earlier published wording gave the source of this hadith as “narrated by al-Albani”; it is in Sahih al-Bukhari (3675), so it was corrected.
● The abundance of food with the blessing of his prayers: As what happened during the invasion of Tabuk when there was famine, he ordered the companions to bring a rug to him and he spread it and put food on it and called on Allah the Almighty, to bless it, and the companions all ate until they were full and filled all their vessels from it.
● Telling about events that will happen in the future, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
(By Allah, the son of Mary will certainly descend as a just judge: he will break the cross, kill the swine and lay down the jizyah (abolish it); the young she-camels (that is, the camels) will be left and no one will go after them; spite, mutual hatred and envy will disappear; and he will call people to wealth, but no one will accept it.) Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim: 155.
1. The Supreme Eternal Miracle: The Noble Quran |
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There was no prophet who was not given signs like which people believed, but what I have been given is revelation that Allah revealed to me, so I hope to have the most followers of them on the Day of Resurrection” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4981). Allah says that if all humans and jinn came together to produce the equivalent of this Quran, “they could not produce its equal, no matter how they supported each other” (17:88).
2. Cosmic Signs: The Splitting of the Moon |
The people of Makkah asked the Prophet ﷺ to show them a sign, and he showed them the moon split in two, so that they saw Mount Hira between the two halves (Sahih al-Bukhari 3868). Surah Al-Qamar opens with it: “The Hour has drawn near and the moon was split ˹in two˺. Yet, whenever they see a sign, they turn away, saying, ‘Same old magic!’” (54:1-2). Ibn Kathir says that it happened in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as established by mutawatir hadiths with sound chains.
3. Water Gushing and Food Multiplication |
At al-Hudaybiyah the people were thirsty, and the Prophet ﷺ put his hand in a small water vessel; the water began to gush out from between his fingers like springs, and they drank and made ablution. They were fifteen hundred, and Jabir said that even a hundred thousand would have had enough (Sahih al-Bukhari 3576). At the Trench, a sa' of barley and a young goat prepared by Jabir fed the army, who were a thousand, and the pot was still full (Sahih al-Bukhari 4102), and at Tabuk, after his supplication over what was left of their provisions, the army filled every vessel it had (Sahih Muslim 27).
4. The Greeting Stone and the Weeping Palm Trunk |
The Prophet ﷺ said: “I know a stone in Makkah that used to greet me before I was sent; I know it now” (Sahih Muslim 2277). When a pulpit was made for him, the palm tree he used to stand by cried out like a child; he came down and held it to him while it moaned like a child being quieted, and he said that it wept for the remembrance it used to hear near it (Sahih al-Bukhari 3584).
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Mas'ud recalls the companions' experience of signs (Sahih al-Bukhari 3579): “We used to regard the signs as a blessing, while you regard them as a warning.” During a water shortage, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Come to the blessed water of purification; the blessing is from Allah.” Ibn Mas'ud also reports: “We used to hear the food glorifying Allah while it was being eaten.” See why some demanded miracles were withheld.
