Who Are the Prophets Named in the Quran?
Twenty-five prophets whose prophethood is agreed upon.
Scholars differed about the prophethood of Al-Khidr, and he was a prophet according to the verifying scholars. They also differed about the prophethood of Luqman, and the stronger view is that he was a wise man and not a prophet.

1. Twenty-Five Named Prophets |
The Quran names twenty-five prophets, from Adam to Muhammad, peace be upon them, and the believers make no distinction between any of Allah's messengers in believing in them (2:285). The same count is given in how many prophets and messengers the Quran mentions. Six surahs are named after prophets, as explained in which surahs are named after prophets.
2. Eighteen in One Passage |
Eighteen of them are named together in Surah Al-An'am (6:83-86): Ibrahim, Ishaq, Ya'qub, Nuh, Dawud, Sulaiman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun, Zakariya, Yahya, Isa, Ilyas, Isma'il, Al-Yasa', Yunus and Lut. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-An’am.
3. Messengers Not Named |
The twenty-five are not all the messengers: Allah says there are messengers whose stories He has related and messengers whose stories He has not (4:164), as explained in whether the Quran mentions all the prophets and messengers. The difference between a prophet and a messenger is explained in the difference between a Nabi and a Rasul.
4. Al-Khidr and Luqman |
Ibn Kathir notes that al-Khidr's words, I did not do it of my own accord (18:82), are evidence for those who say he was a prophet; others said he was a messenger, others an angel, and many held that he was not a prophet but a righteous friend of Allah. On Luqman, Ibn Kathir says the early scholars held two views, a prophet or a righteous servant without prophethood, and that most held the second, as explained in who Luqman was.
5. The Seal of the Prophets |
The last of them is Muhammad, peace be upon him: Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets (33:40).
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir notes that the best-known report on the total number of prophets is the long hadith of Abu Dharr, giving 124,000 prophets and 313 messengers. Ibn Hibban judged it authentic, while Ibn al-Jawzi listed it among fabricated reports, and Ibn Kathir adds that the version from Abu Umamah has three weak narrators.
