What Was the Prophet (PBUH) Called Before His Mission?
Allah the Almighty protected His Messenger from all defects, and gave him a beautiful character, so his people called him the honest and faithful.
1. Universal Consensus on "Al-Sadiq Al-Amin" |
Throughout his youth and adulthood in pre-Islamic Mecca, Muhammad stood apart from his contemporaries. The people of Mecca commonly gave him the combined title of Al-Sadiq (the Truthful who never lied) and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy who never betrayed a trust).
2. The Keeper of Meccan Trusts and Valuables |
Even after Quraysh fiercely opposed his prophetic message, their respect for his personal honesty remained absolute. Wealthy Meccans continued to deposit their gold, jewels, and precious assets exclusively with him for safekeeping rather than trusting their own clan chiefs.
3. The Public Testimonial at Mount Safa |
When instructed to announce the call publicly at Mount Safa, the Prophet tested their evaluation of his character: "If I warned you that enemy cavalry was behind this hill, would you believe me?" All chiefs answered without hesitation: "Yes, we have never experienced anything from you but truth!"
4. Heraclius and the Criterion of Lifelong Truthfulness |
When Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium, interrogated Abu Sufyan (then leader of Meccan polytheism) about Muhammad, he asked: "Did you ever accuse him of lying before he claimed what he claimed?" Abu Sufyan replied: "No." Heraclius concluded: "A man who never lies to people will never fabricate lies against God."
5. The Moral Precondition of Prophethood |
Surah Yunus points to his forty years of impeccable pre-prophetic character as self-evident proof: "I lived among you a lifetime before this; will you not then understand?" Unblemished truthfulness was the bedrock upon which the credibility of revelation was established.
