How Did the Prophet (PBUH) React After His Encounter With Jibril?
The Prophet returned to Khadija while his heart was beating rapidly. He related to her what happened. So she calmed him and said: Rejoice for Allah would never let you down. You are good with your relations, and you are honest. You help people overcome their trouble. Then she took him to her cousin, Waraqah bin Naufal who, during the Pre-Islamic Period became a Christian. Khadija said to Waraqah, “Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!” Waraqah asked, “O my nephew! What have you seen?” Allah’s Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqah said, “This was the same one who keeps the secrets whom Allah had sent to Moses (Angel Gabriel). I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Apostle asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqah replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly.” But after a few days Waraqah died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while.
1. Returning with Trembling Heart from Cave Hira |
After the mighty angel Gabriel embraced him thrice and recited the first verses of Surah Al-'Alaq, the sheer majesty of encountering an archangel left Muhammad in awe. He descended Mount Hira with his heart pulsating rapidly, returning home in profound vulnerability.
2. The Cry: "Wrap Me Up! Wrap Me Up!" (Zammiluni) |
Rushing into his home, Muhammad sought warmth and comfort from his faithful wife Khadijah, uttering the famous words: "Wrap me up! Wrap me up!" She covered him with blankets and held him tenderly until his physical shivering and emotional awe subsided.
3. Sharing His Fears and Khadijah's Golden Consolation |
Muhammad confessed to Khadijah: "I feared for myself." Khadijah delivered the most celebrated consolation in history: "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you, for you maintain family ties, tell the truth, support the needy, host guests, and assist during misfortunes."
4. Consultation with Waraqah ibn Nawfal |
Khadijah took him to her aged, blind cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a learned scholar of Hebrew scriptures. Upon hearing the Prophet's account, Waraqah proclaimed: "This is the same Heavenly Archangel (An-Namus) who was sent down to Moses! I wish I were young when your people expel you!"
5. Forewarning of Exile and Universal Opposition |
When the Prophet asked in astonishment: "Will they really expel me?" Waraqah replied: "Yes, never has a man brought what you have brought except that he was met with hostility." This early confirmation prepared Muhammad for the sacrifices required by divine mission.
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet's initial tremble and vulnerability after meeting Gabriel point to the reality of divine revelation: it was not a product of personal hallucination or internal ambition, but an overwhelming external encounter. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Muzzammil.
