Who Were the Disciples of Jesus?
They are a group from the Children of Israel who believed in him, and they supported him.
(When Jesus sensed disbelief from his people, he asked, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah. We believe in Allah, so bear witness that we have submitted.”) Al-Imran 3:52
1. Identity and Meaning of Al-Hawariyyun |
Ibn Kathir explains (3:52) that the soundest meaning of hawari is helper (nasir), citing the Prophet's words: "Every prophet has a hawari, and my hawari is az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2847, Sahih Muslim 2415). He also reports that some said the disciples were named for their white clothes (hawar is whiteness).
2. Answering the Call in the Hour of Rejection |
When Prophet Jesus felt stubborn disbelief and resistance from many of the Israelites, he asked: "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples boldly stepped forward, declaring their unwavering allegiance to the divine message.
3. Their Explicit Proclamation of Islam and Monotheism |
The Quran records that the disciples declared: "We have believed, so bear witness that indeed we are Muslims" (5:111). They affirmed Allah's oneness and saw themselves as followers of the one religion of all the prophets, the same call described in what Jesus called the people to; the Prophet ﷺ said the prophets are brothers whose "religion is one" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3443).
4. Their Supplication for Divine Witness |
The disciples demonstrated deep spiritual humility, turning to Allah in sincere prayer: "Our Lord! We believe in Your revelations and follow the messenger, so count us among those who bear witness" (3:53).
5. A Model for the Believers |
Surah As-Saff holds up the disciples as a model for the believers: "O believers! Stand up for Allah, as Jesus, son of Mary, asked the disciples" (61:14). Ibn Kathir explains that Allah commands His believing servants to support Him in all their states, in word and deed, with their lives and wealth, and to answer Allah and His Messenger as the disciples answered Jesus.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Qurtubi records conflicting accounts of who the disciples were, reporting their number and several proposed occupations (3:52): “They were twelve men; al-Kalbi and Abu Rawq said this.” In the account attributed to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): “And they were fishermen.” “Ibn Abi Najih and Ibn Artah said: They were fullers.” “It was also said: They were kings.” See the disciples’ request for heavenly food.
