What Did Jesus (PBUH) Call the People To?
Answer:
He called them to worship Allah (˹Jesus also declared,˺ “Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺.) Maryam 19: 36 and on the Day of Judgement Allah will ask him about this matter and he will answer.
And ˹on Judgment Day˺ Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you ever ask the people to worship you and your mother as gods besides Allah?” He will answer, “Glory be to You! How could I ever say what I had no right to say? If I had said such a thing, you would have certainly known it. You know what is ˹hidden˺ within me, but I do not know what is within You. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Knower of all unseen. Al-Ma’idah 5: 116
In these verses we read the humble reply of Jesus when Allah will ask him on the Day of Judgment if he ever said to take him and his mother as gods. Jesus will flatly deny all such false claims.
1. The Foundational Proclamation: Worship Allah Alone |
The core message of Prophet Jesus was pure, uncompromising Tawheed. He proclaimed to the Children of Israel: "Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord," explicitly placing himself as an obedient servant alongside his people before the One True God.
2. The Stern Warning Against Associating Partners (Shirk) |
Jesus explicitly cautioned his followers against shirk (associating partners with Allah), warning that whoever directs worship to any entity other than Allah has forfeited Paradise, made Hellfire their final abode, and will find no helper against divine judgment. This applies to whoever dies upon shirk without repenting, since Allah forgives every sin, shirk included, for those who repent (39:53).
3. Resolving Theological Disputes with Wisdom |
Surah Az-Zukhruf records that Jesus came endowed with divine wisdom to resolve contentious disagreements that had fractured Israelite society, instructing them: "Fear Allah and obey me. Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him."
4. His Complete Renunciation of False Deification |
On the Day of Judgment, Allah will question Jesus before all creation: "Did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah'?" Jesus will passionately glorify Allah and deny ever uttering such falsehood, testifying that he commanded only what Allah ordained.
5. The Straight Path of All Divine Messengers |
Jesus affirmed in both Surah Maryam and Surah Az-Zukhruf that worshipping Allah alone "is a straight path" (hadha siratun mustaqim). His call was identical to that of Ibrahim, Musa, and Muhammad: submission to the Creator alone.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:116-117) captures the definitive testimony of Jesus before Allah on the Last Day, establishing beyond question that he never claimed divinity and preached only pure monotheism. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Ma'idah.
