Who Is Jesus (PBUH)? Is He the Son of God?
Jesus pbuh was a Messenger like the other Messengers pbut. He was a man who was sent by Allah Almighty with miracles to support his prophethood. He was sent to pass on a Message from Allah Almighty to his people, the Children of Israel, in his days and to confirm what was in the Torah. (Corrected here from the original published English, which said 'mankind'; the scholar's Arabic and the Quran (3:49) say he was sent to the Children of Israel.)
He was born to Mary without a father as his birth was a miracle. Mary was a virgin and Allah inspired to her through the Angel Gabriel that she will bear a child who will be a Messenger.
So he is NOT the son of God. And He is not one of the three (The Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit).
(O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes regarding your faith; say nothing about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah and the fulfilment of His Word through Mary and a spirit ˹created by a command˺ from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, “Trinity.” Stop! - for your own good. Allah is only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah is sufficient as a Trustee of Affairs. The Messiah would never be too proud to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels nearest to Allah. Those who are too proud and arrogant to worship Him will be brought before Him all together.) An-Nisa 4:171-172
(Indeed, those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have fallen into disbelief. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Who has the power to prevent Allah if He chose to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone in the world all together?” To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. He creates whatever He wills. And Allah is Most Capable of everything.) Al-Ma’idah 5:17
(Those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. The Messiah ˹himself˺ said, “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah - my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates others with Allah ˹in worship˺ will surely be forbidden Paradise by Allah. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.) Al-Ma’idah 5:72
(Those who say, “Allah is one in a Trinity,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. There is only One God. If they do not stop saying this, those who disbelieve among them will be afflicted with a painful punishment.) Al-Ma’idah 5:73
(The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!) Al-Ma’idah 5: 75
(and for their denial and outrageous accusation against Mary) An-Nisa 4: 156
(The Jews say, “Ezra is the son of Allah,” while the Christians say, “The Messiah is the son of Allah.” Such are their baseless assertions, only parroting the words of earlier disbelievers. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺? They have taken their rabbis and monks as well as the Messiah, son of Mary, as lords besides Allah, even though they were commanded to worship none but One God. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. Glorified is He above what they associate ˹with Him˺!) At_Tawba 9: 30-31

1. The True Quranic Identity of Jesus |
The Quran defines Jesus with absolute clarity: he is the son of Mary, a human prophet, and a messenger of resolute purpose. The phrase "word from Him" signifies that he was brought into existence through the divine creative command "Be" (Kun), not that he is a divine entity.
2. The Rejection of Divine Sonship |
Islamic monotheism strictly rejects the concept that Allah has a son. In the Islamic understanding, sonship would imply physical reproduction, need, and likeness, all of which are impossible for the Self-Sufficient Creator who created the entire universe out of nothingness.
3. The Analogy of Adam and Jesus |
To those who claim a fatherless birth proves divinity, the Quran presents an undeniable rational argument: Prophet Adam was created from dust without a father and without a mother, yet no one claims Adam is divine. Jesus's birth is a sign of divine power, not of divine parentage.
4. Meaning of "A Spirit from Him" (Ruhun Minhu) |
The description of Jesus as "a spirit from Him" (ruhun minhu) is an expression of honor, just as the Kaaba is called "the House of Allah" (Baytullah). The spirit breathed into Maryam was created by Allah and conveyed through Gabriel, belonging entirely to the realm of creation.
5. Proclamation of Pure Monotheism |
Throughout the Quran, Jesus repeatedly clarifies his relationship to Allah: "Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path." Honoring Jesus means following his pristine monotheistic guidance.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Ikhlas encapsulates the core Islamic creed: Allah is absolute, eternal, neither begetting nor begotten. Understanding Jesus as a revered human prophet harmonizes reason with divine revelation. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Ikhlas.
Frequently Asked Questions |
Is Jesus the son of God according to Islam?
No, Islam unequivocally rejects divine sonship. Jesus is a created human being, an honoured prophet, and a messenger of Allah.
What does "a Word from Allah" mean regarding Jesus?
It means that he was created directly through Allah's command "Be" (Kun), without the medium of a human biological father.
What does "a spirit from Him" mean?
It is an attribution of honour (idafat tashrif) indicating that his spirit was created by Allah and breathed into Maryam by angel Gabriel.
How does the creation of Adam refute the divinity of Jesus?
Adam was created without either a father or a mother, which is even more miraculous, yet he is universally recognized as a mortal creation, not God.
