When Were the First Commands Given to Adam and All Generations?
After Adam disobeyed Allah's command not to approach a particular tree in Paradise, Allah ordered him to descend to earth and told him that He would send guidance for people to follow. "We said, 'Descend all of you! Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows it, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve. But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever'" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:38-39).
1. A Promise Given Alongside the Descent |
This promise of future guidance was announced at the very moment of descent from Paradise, following the events covered in Why Were Adam and His Wife Expelled From Paradise? Even as Adam left Paradise, Allah was already establishing the system of accountability that would govern every generation to follow him.
2. A Framework, Not a Single Command |
Rather than a single specific rule, what was promised here is an entire ongoing framework: guidance that would continue coming, generation after generation, through the line of Prophets who followed Adam. This verse sets up the pattern explored throughout this chapter, of Allah sending Messengers and Prophets across human history to deliver that same guidance.
3. Two Paths Laid Out From the Beginning |
The verse does not only promise guidance; it lays out the consequence of both following it and rejecting it in the same breath, security for those who follow and the Fire for those who deny. This dual structure, established at the very start of human life on earth, is treated by scholars as the foundational statement of human accountability that the rest of the Quran builds upon.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Sa'di, on fear and sorrow in the promise accompanying Adam's descent (2:38): “The difference between them is that if a distressing thing has already passed, it causes sorrow, whereas if it is anticipated, it causes fear. He negated both for whoever follows His guidance. When both are absent, their opposite is attained: complete security.” See Adam's repentance after disobeying his Lord.
