What Was Adam's Stance After He Disobeyed His Lord?
Adam said great words: "They replied, 'Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be losers'" (Surah Al-A'raf 7:23). And these are the words that are referenced in Surah Al-Baqarah: "Then Adam was inspired with words ˹of prayer˺ by his Lord, so He accepted his repentance. Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:37).
1. No Blame Placed Elsewhere |
Despite having been deliberately deceived by Iblis, Adam's words in Surah Al-A'raf 7:23 place responsibility entirely on himself and his wife, "We have wronged ourselves," without shifting blame onto the one who tempted them. This response is a model of repentance: full ownership of the wrong, regardless of what external factors contributed to it.
2. Words Given by Allah Himself |
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:37 describes Adam as receiving these words of repentance "from his Lord," meaning Allah Himself inspired the very words Adam used to seek forgiveness. Ibn Kathir reports from Mujahid and others that these words are the prayer of 7:23. So Allah did not merely wait to see if Adam would repent, but actively guided him toward the sincere repentance that would be accepted.
3. A Single Sin Did Not Define Him | ذنب واحد لم يحدد هويته
Despite the sin that led to expulsion from Paradise, covered in Why Were Adam and His Wife Expelled From Paradise?, Adam remained honored by Allah as a Prophet, one of the 25 named directly in the Quran. His story is presented as proof that a single failing, met with sincere repentance, does not define a person's standing with Allah.
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said (Sahih Muslim 2747): “Allah is more joyful at His servant's repentance when he repents to Him than one of you whose mount, carrying his food and drink, escaped from him in a deserted land. Despairing of it, he came to a tree and lay in its shade, having lost hope of his mount. While he was in that state, there it was, standing beside him, and he took hold of its reins.” See the benefits of repentance and seeking forgiveness.
