The Quran narrates this account in detail in Surah Al-Ma'idah without naming either brother directly; the names Cain (Qabil) and Abel (Habil) come from the wider Islamic exegetical tradition rather than the Quranic text itself. The verses that tell the story are set out in which surah mentions the two sons of Adam. The names are widely transmitted in the exegetical reports, but they are not stated in the Quran.

This first crime did not happen without cause; it followed directly from jealousy after a sacrifice was accepted from one brother and not the other (5:27), covered in full in What Was the Reason Behind the Murder of Abel? The Quran presents the motive alongside the act itself, giving later generations a full picture of how jealousy can escalate into humanity's first act of violence.
