What Was Mary's Reaction When the Angel Told Her of a Faultless Son?
She was very surprised because she was completely chaste and no mortal man had touched her. But the angel told her that his birth was the command of Allah, a miracle birth, a thing already ordained. When Allah orders a thing to happen, He only has to say "Be," and it is.
("She wondered, 'How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, nor am I unchaste?' He replied, 'So will it be! Your Lord says, "It is easy for Me. And so will We make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us." It is a matter already decreed.'") (Maryam 19:20-21)
("Mary wondered, 'My Lord! How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?'") (Al-Imran 3:47)
1. A Second Denial the Other Verse Doesn't Have | نفيٌ إضافي لا تحمله الآية الأخرى
Surah Al-Imran records Mary asking only how she could have a child when no man had touched her. Surah Maryam adds a second, more pointed denial in her own words: "nor am I unchaste." She was not simply confused about the mechanics of what was happening; she was, before anything else, defending her chastity, ruling out the very accusation her own people would later throw at her when she returned carrying her son.
2. Why This Birth Specifically, and Its Purpose |
Surah Maryam gives a reason Al-Imran does not spell out here: Allah says He will make this child "a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us." His fatherless birth was never meant to stand alone; it points toward everything he would go on to do, from speaking as an infant to the miracles Allah later granted him as an adult, all part of one continuous sign.
3. The Same Refrain Given to Zachariah |
"It is easy for Me" is not unique to this moment. The very same surah uses the identical phrase to answer Zachariah's astonishment that he could have a son at his old age, "It is easy for Me, just as I created you before, when you were nothing." Surah Maryam deliberately places these two miracle-birth announcements, Zachariah's son and Mary's son, back to back with matching language, tying the two accounts together as one demonstration of the same divine power. What immediately followed this announcement is covered in how Mary got pregnant and how she gave birth.
Scholarly Insight: Maryam 19:20-21 and Al-Imran 3:47 record the same exchange from two angles, with Surah Maryam alone naming its purpose. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Maryam.
