How Did Mary Get Pregnant and How Did She Give Birth?
Mary was chaste and very pious, and her mother, the wife of Imran, had placed her in the house of Allah to serve and worship there. One day she left the house for a need and was surprised by the angel, who gave her the glad tidings. Almighty Allah sent her an angel to give her the news that she would bear a child who would be special and would be a messenger of Allah.
("And mention in the Book the story of Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place in the east, and screened herself off from them. Then We sent to her Our angel, Gabriel, appearing before her as a man, perfectly formed. She appealed, 'I truly seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you! So leave me alone if you are God-fearing.' He responded, 'I am only a messenger from your Lord, sent to bless you with a pure son.'") (Maryam 19:16-19)
1. Withdrawal and a Screen, Before Anything Happened |
Mary had already withdrawn from her family to a place apart, and had gone further still and placed a screen between herself and everyone else. This was ordinary privacy, not a response to anything unusual; the extraordinary event had not yet occurred. Her instinct toward seclusion is what the angel then approached.
2. Her First Instinct, Before Knowing Who He Was | ردة فعلها الأولى، قبل معرفة من هو
Gabriel appeared to her "as a man, perfectly formed," and Mary's immediate response, before he had said a single word to identify himself, was to seek refuge in Allah from him and to invoke his own piety as a reason to leave her alone. She did not wait to find out his intentions before defending herself. Only after this did he explain, "I am only a messenger from your Lord, sent to bless you with a pure son."
3. What "Pure" Already Signaled |
Gabriel's word choice, a "pure son" (ghulaman zakiyyan), announces the child's righteous character in the very sentence that announces his existence, before Mary has even asked how such a birth could happen. Her astonished question, and Allah's full answer to it, immediately follow this announcement and are covered in Mary's reaction to the angel's news.
Scholarly Insight: Maryam 19:16-19 sets the scene for the announcement that the following verses answer in full. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Maryam.
