How Did the Whale Come to Swallow Yunus?
Yunus (Jonah) PBUH was thrown overboard the ship into the ocean. When he ran away from his people because they did not answer his call to Allah, he got onto a ship. When the ship was about to sink, the crew threw all the cargo, and they had to throw some people. They drew lots to see which of those aboard should be cast overboard and the lot fell on him. So, they threw him overboard and the whale swallowed him.
(And Jonah was indeed one of the messengers. ˹Remember˺ when he fled to the overloaded ship. Then ˹to save it from sinking,˺ he drew straws ˹with other passengers˺. He lost ˹and was thrown overboard˺. Then the whale swallowed him up while he was blameworthy. And had he not been of those who glorify Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected). (Al-Saffat 37:139-144)
1. Fleeing First, Then Boarding the Ship |
The chain of events begins with the departure covered in why Yunus was described as blameworthy, leaving his people without permission. This page picks up right after that decision, tracing the physical sequence of events that followed it, from the ship's deck to the whale's belly.
2. An Ordinary Maritime Crisis |
According to tafsir accounts, the overloaded ship was in danger of sinking, and those aboard drew lots to decide who would be cast into the sea to lighten it.
3. A Lot That Fell on Him Repeatedly |
Commentators note that the lot did not simply fall on Yunus once, it fell on him again when it was redrawn, underscoring that this was not treated by those present as an arbitrary or unlucky outcome to be overturned, but as a result repeated enough times to be accepted.
4. Swallowed, Not Drowned |
Being cast into open water would ordinarily end in drowning. Instead, the Ayah describes him being swallowed whole by the whale, a fate that kept him alive rather than ending his life. This detail sets up the greater sign that follows: not just survival in the sea, but survival inside a living creature until Allah brought about his deliverance, as explained in how Allah delivered Yunus from the whale's belly.
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir reports this account of Yunus being swallowed (37:142): “Allah Most High commanded a whale from the green sea to pass through the seas and swallow Yunus, peace be upon him, without crushing his flesh or breaking any of his bones. That whale came, and Yunus cast himself in, so the whale swallowed him.” See Allah's deliverance of Yunus from the whale. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah As-Saffat.
