Which Prophet Was Blamed and Swallowed by the Whale, and Why?
Allah Almighty says: (Then the whale swallowed him up while he was blameworthy.)
Yunus (Jonah) pbuh was a messenger sent by Allah Almighty to the people of Nineveh.
He was blameworthy because he had admonished his people and warned them of Allah's Wrath but when the punishment did not fall on them and still, they didn't believe, he left them angry at them, and they were angry with him. He left them without permission from his Lord and abandoned his call to Allah.
The call to people requires patience, and Yunus did not have that patience.
(Then the whale swallowed him up while he was blameworthy.) Al-Saffat 37:142
1. Sent to the People of Nineveh |
Yunus was sent as a messenger to Nineveh, a city whose people were warned of impending punishment for their disbelief. His story, including the moment he was swallowed by the whale, is also identified in which prophet was swallowed by the whale and rescued. What this page adds is the reason behind the blame the Ayah itself attaches to him.
2. Leaving Without Permission and Repenting |
It is important to be precise about what "blameworthy" means here: Yunus did not disbelieve or commit a major sin. His fault was leaving his post, departing from his people and his mission, without his Lord's permission. Scholars are careful to distinguish this prophetic misstep, a lapse in patience under real strain, from the kind of sin an ordinary sinner might commit.
3. Dawah Requires Patience, Even for a Prophet |
The answer draws out a direct principle: calling people to Allah requires patience and steadfastness, and Yunus's departure came from lacking exactly that. Scholars point to this as a sober lesson precisely because it involves a prophet, if patience in dawah could be tested even in someone chosen by Allah for that role, it is a real and ongoing struggle for anyone who takes up the same work.
4. Chosen by Lot on an Overloaded Ship |
The verses immediately before this one describe Yunus boarding an overloaded ship and being chosen by drawing lots to be thrown overboard when the crew needed to lighten it. This detail, that his being cast into the sea was decided by a drawing of lots rather than a direct command, sets up exactly how ordinary and unremarkable the moment looked before the whale appeared.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Qurtubi explains the disputed wording about Yunus's expectation before the whale swallowed him (21:87): "It is taken from decree, which means judgment, rather than power and ability. Ahmad ibn Yahya Thalab said ... it belongs to determining, not to power: one says that Allah decreed good for you, meaning that Allah determined good for you." For his subsequent prayer, see Yunus's supplication inside the whale. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah As-Saffat.
