How Did Allah Deliver Yunus From the Whale’s Belly?
When the whale swallowed Yunus pbuh, he was in the darkness of the sea and the darkness of the belly of the whale and in the darkness of the night, he called unto Allah saying: “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.” which includes a recognition of Allah’s Oneness and an acknowledgment of His impartiality of every shortcoming and includes a confession from Younus, peace be upon him, of his own injustice. (Al-Anbiya 21:87)
When Yunus pbuh called Allah pleading, Allah ordered the whale to spit him out and toss him onto the seashore.
The whale cast Yunus pbuh out suffering from fatigue and disease, “But We cast him onto the open shore”, the bare land in which there is nothing, “˹totally˺ worn out,”, i.e., ˹totally˺ worn out because of his imprisonment in the belly of the whale.
Allah gave Yunus, peace be upon him, several gifts, including:
Allah grew a tree of squash above him, and this tree and its fruit have several advantages: one of which is that it is fast-growing, it has large leaves, and flies do not go close to it, and its fruit is nutritious and gives whoever eats it strength.
He was kind to him once again, and He gave him a blessing and sent him “to a hundred thousand or more.”
The people to whom Allah sent him believed in him, and they became in the balance of his works, “they believed”, because he is the one who prays for them.
“We have entertained them for a while”, i.e., Allah has spared them the agony that they deserved, and which would have been inflicted on them. (As-Saffat 37:145-148)
1. Calling Out From Three Layers of Darkness |
Scholars count the darkness surrounding Yunus in this moment as threefold: the darkness of the open sea, the darkness inside the whale, and the darkness of night itself. Naming all three together in the exegetical tradition emphasizes how total his isolation was when he called out, with no natural means of rescue available to him at all.
2. A Prayer That Begins With Allah’s Oneness |
Yunus’s supplication opens not with a request, but with a declaration that there is no god but Allah and that Allah is beyond every imperfection. Only after affirming this does he acknowledge his own wrongdoing. Scholars point to this order, tawheed first and self-accountability second, as the pattern the dua itself teaches, not just its wording.
3. Rescued, but Not Instantly Restored |
Being cast onto the shore did not mean Yunus’s ordeal was immediately over; he was left sick and worn out on bare, empty land with nothing around him. Commentators note this detail as a realistic picture of deliverance, being saved from death is not the same as being instantly returned to full strength, and Allah’s care for him continued in the recovery that followed.
4. A Tree Suited Exactly to His Need |
The gourd tree Allah grew over him is described with specific practical qualities, fast-growing shade, broad leaves, freedom from flies, and nourishing fruit, each one suited to a weakened man recovering in the open with no shelter. The specificity of these details is treated as evidence of deliberate, attentive care rather than a generic mention of provision.
5. The Mission That Redeemed His Departure |
Yunus had originally left his people out of frustration that they were not believing. Once restored, he is sent out again, this time to a hundred thousand people or more, and they believe. Scholars read this ending as directly answering the failure that started the whole episode, the very kind of response he had despaired of finally comes, but only after his own trial was complete.
Scholarly Insight: Yunus’s supplication is recorded in Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87, and his deliverance, recovery, and mission to a hundred thousand people or more are recorded in Surah As-Saffat 37:145-148. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Anbiya and the tafsir of Surah As-Saffat.
