{ ٱلصَّافَّاتِ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 1
1. Allah Almighty swears by the angels who range themselves in ranks as they stand in His presence. (The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to his people: “Why do you not range yourselves in ranks as the angels do when they are in the presence of their Lord?” They asked: “And how do the angels range themselves before their Lord?” He said: “They complete the front rows and stand closely in line.” (Reported by al-Imam Muslim))
{ فَٱلزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْراً }
{ فَٱلزَّاجِرَاتِ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 2
2. Allah swears by the angels who deter people from evil and wrong-doing by inspiration, and drive them violently away.
{ فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكْراً }
{ فَٱلتَّالِيَاتِ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 3
3. Allah swears by the angels who proclaim the message of Allah to His prophets.
{ إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ }
{ لَوَاحِدٌ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 4
4. Allah Almighty swears by the angels that complete the ranks, and dissuade evil people from sins and evil-deeds, and recite Allah’s verses to His messengers, that He is One without associates. There is no Allah but He. (This is the reply to the oath.)
{ رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَارِقِ }
{ ٱلْمَشَارِقِ } { ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 5
5. There is no Allah but He, Lord of the earth and the heavens, it is He who created them and all that is between them. He is the Master of the universe and all that it contains like the planets which rise from the East and set in the West. In this verse, Allah is content to mention the easts, the wests being implicit in the text. Because every planet has several easts (rising points), He said Lord of the easts and not the East.
{ إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ }
Surah As-Saffat: Verse 6
6. Allah Almighty has decked the sky closest to the earth with stars and made it a light and an ornament for the inhabitants of the earth.
{ وَحِفْظاً مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّارِدٍ }
{ شَيْطَانٍ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 7
7. Allah guards the sky against every rebellious devil. Thus, if he transgresses his limits to eavesdrop, he will be followed by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.
{ لاَّ يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَىٰ ٱلْمَلإِ ٱلأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 8
8. The devils are not allowed to listen to what goes on in Heavens and the angels they contain. If they try to reach a place to eavesdrop on what the angels are saying, they are pursued by piercing meteors and forced back from all the ways which lead to Heaven.
{ دُحُوراً وَلَهُمْ عَذابٌ وَاصِبٌ }

{ إِلاَّ مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 10
10. Unless one devil should snatch information from the Exalted Assembly and pass it on to the devil beneath him who relays it to one beneath him. Perhaps the devil is hit by a piercing flame before he passes the information or he may give it away before the flame hits him and therefore pass it on to a fortune-teller as reported in the Hadith.
{ فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقاً أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّن طِينٍ لاَّزِبٍ }
{ خَلَقْنَاهُم }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 11
11. O Mohammad, ask those who deny the Resurrection: “Which is more difficult to create, is it men or the heavens, the earth and the creatures and things which lie between them and which no one knows about except Allah Almighty?” As they admit that the creation of these beings is far more difficult than the creation of man, why, then, do they deny resurrection when they have seen what is greater than that? They were created from an insignificant and weak material, from sticky clay which can adhere to the hand, why do they then doubt their re-creation?
{ بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 12
12. You, Mohammad, marvel at the denial of those stubborn unbelievers of the Resurrection in spite of all the proofs and signs about the might of Allah and the truth of your mission. They ridicule your wonder at their behaviour and your confirmation of the truth of the ineluctability of the Resurrection.
{ وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ لاَ يَذْكُرُونَ }
Surah As-Saffat: Verse 13
13. And when they are admonished, it is of no benefit to them because their hearts have hardened due to the evil and wrong-doings they have committed.
{ وَإِذَا رَأَوْاْ آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ }
{ آيَةً }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 14
14. And when they see proof and miracles that attest to the truth of what their messengers preach and remind them of Allah and His signs, and of His great ability to create, they call to one another in mockery.
{ وَقَالُوۤاْ إِن هَـٰذَآ إِلاَّ سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ }
Surah As-Saffat: Verse 15
15. And they say: “What you have brought is nothing but evident sorcery.
{ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَاباً وَعِظَاماً أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ }
{ أَإِذَا } { عِظَاماً } { أَإِنَّا }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 16
16. “Will we be raised from our graves after we die and our bodies and bones have decomposed and become dust?
{ أَوَ آبَآؤُنَا ٱلأَوَّلُونَ }
{ آبَآؤُنا }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 17
17. “And will our first ancestors also be raised from the dead and come to life again? They have been long dead and, therefore, is not their resurrection far more difficult, stranger and more unlikely?”
{ قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَntُمْ دَاخِرُونَ }
{ دَاخِرُونَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 18
18. Oh Mohammad tell them: “You will be raised from the dead on the Day of Resurrection after you have turned to decayed bones and reduced to dust. The might of Allah is immense and unlimited, you will be submissive and humiliated.”
{ فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ }
{ وَاحِدَةٌ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 19
19. Your resurrection is a simple matter for Allah: He will give the command to sound the trumpet once only and the people will all rise from their graves, alive, to see the promised Day of Judgement.
{ وَقَالُواْ يٰوَيْلَنَا هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ }
{ يٰوَيْلَنَا }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 20
20. The non-believers will then repent and blame themselves saying: “Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgement that the prophet has warned us of. But we mocked and disbelieved him.”
{ هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُمْ بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ }
Surah As-Saffat: Verse 21
21. They will be told (the angels will tell them or the believers will say this, or they themselves will tell one another): “This is the day of judgement on which the good and the evil will be separated, and when each will be distinguished from the other. And you disbelieved it in your life on earth.”
{ ٱحْشُرُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَعْبُدُونَ }
{ أَزْوَاجَهُمْ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 22
22. Allah Almighty orders the angels to separate the non-believers from the believers and to group together the wrong-doers with their likes, so that the fornicators will be assembled with the fornicators, the usurers with the usurers, the idol worshippers with the idols they worshipped besides Allah.
{ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ }
{ صِرَاطِ }

{ مَّسْئُولُونَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 24
24. “Keep them there so that they may be asked about the deeds which they did and about the sins and the disobediences they committed.”
{ مَا لَكُمْ لاَ تَنَاصَرُونَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 75
75. Allah Almighty has already mentioned the ancient nations who had gone astray. He takes up here the same subject in more detail by speaking of Noah and what the deniers among his people, only a few of whom had followed him, inflicted on him. He cried out to his Lord to help him against the unbelievers among his people. (see chapter 54 – Al-Qamar (The Moon), 10: “He invoked his Lord saying: ‘I am overcome, do you then help me?’”) Allah Almighty was the best to respond and help His servant and messenger. Surah As-Saffat: Verse 154

{ بِكِتَابِكُمْ } { صَادِقِينَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 157

{ وَجَعَلُواْ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ نَسَباً وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ ٱلجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ }

Aisha, the mother of believers, said: “The Messenger of Allah said once: ‘In the lower heavens, there is no place but that is occupied by an angel in either a prostrate or standing position. This is the meaning of Allah Almighty’s words: ‘There is none of us but has a known place.’” (Reported by Ibn abi Hatem and Ibn Jareer).
{ وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ }

(Ibn Jareeh said: “They did not range in ranks during prayers until this verse was revealed.”) And in a Hadith reported by Muslim, the Prophet said: “Allah has preferred us to other people by three graces: We are ranged in ranks like those of the angels; the earth serves us as a place of worship; and its soil serves to purify us.”
{ وَإِآَّ لَنَحْنُ ٱلْمُسَبِّحُونَ }

Surah As-Saffat: Verse 168
168. that they had someone to remind them of what Allah had commanded and what He had forbidden, or that they had a book from Allah which contained the laws and the stories of preceding centuries.
{ لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ }
Surah As-Saffat: Verse 169

{ فَكَفَرُواْ بِهِ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ }

But they will soon know the outcome of their disbelief and perversity. And they will soon see Allah’s punishment and vengeance which awaits them on Judgement Day.
