One of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah
Al-Lateef
The Most Subtle
Al-Lateef has two sides: the Subtle One, and the Gracious, kind and generous to His servants. Al-Sa'di explains both, a knowledge fine enough to reach every secret, and a kindness that brings good to a servant by ways he never sees. Yusuf said it of his own story: his Lord is subtle in what He wills (12:100).

The Subtlety of His Knowledge
No vision can encompass Him, but He encompasses all vision. For He is the Most Subtle, All-Aware.
No vision can encompass Him, yet He encompasses all vision: that is 6:103, and the Name comes right after. Al-Sa'di dwells on the second half. Outward and inward are both within His knowledge; every voice, loud or hushed, within His hearing; everything seen, small or large, within His sight. And the Most Subtle, he says, is the One whose knowledge is fine enough to reach secrets, hidden things and what lies within.
Arabic:
Subtle in Fulfilling What He Wills
﴿وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيْهِ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا۟ لَهُۥ سُجَّدًا ۖ وَقَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ هَـٰذَا تَأْوِيلُ رُءْيَـٰىَ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّى حَقًّا ۖ وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِىٓ إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِى مِنَ ٱلسِّجْنِ وَجَآءَ بِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْبَدْوِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن نَّزَغَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَ إِخْوَتِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَطِيفٌ لِّمَا يَشَآءُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ﴾Then he raised his parents to the throne, and they all fell down in prostration to Joseph, who then said, “O my dear father! This is the interpretation of my old dream. My Lord has made it come true. He was truly kind to me when He freed me from prison, and brought you all from the desert after Satan had ignited rivalry between me and my siblings. Indeed my Lord is subtle in fulfilling what He wills. Surely He ˹alone˺ is the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
Yusuf said it when his parents bowed before him and his old dream came true, after the well, the prison and the years apart: my Lord is subtle in fulfilling what He wills (12:100). Al-Sa'di explains it from Yusuf's own story. He brings His goodness to a servant from where the servant does not perceive, and raises him to high ranks by way of things he disliked.
Arabic:
Even a Mustard Seed
˹Even˺ if a deed were the weight of a mustard seed, be it ˹hidden˺ in a rock or in the heavens or the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware.
Even the weight of a mustard seed, Luqman told his son, hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth, Allah will bring it forth, for Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware (31:16). Why tell a son this? So that he keeps Allah in mind and obeys Him as far as he can, al-Sa'di says, and stays away from wrong, little or much.
Ever Kind to His Servants
﴿ٱللَّهُ لَطِيفٌۢ بِعِبَادِهِۦ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ﴾Allah is Ever Kind to His servants. He provides ˹abundantly˺ to whoever He wills. And He is the All-Powerful, Almighty.
42:19 says Allah is Ever Kind to His servants. Al-Sa'di defines the word there with both its sides: the One who knows consciences and secrets, and who brings His servants, the believers above all, to what is good for them from where they neither know nor expect. His first example is guidance itself, given in a way the servant never imagined. The same two sides are in the definition above, the Subtle and the Gracious.
Arabic:
The Subtle, the Aware Would Tell Me
﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَتُصْبِحُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مُخْضَرَّةً ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ﴾Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, then the earth becomes green? Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware.
One night Aisha followed the Prophet ﷺ to al-Baqi' and ran home ahead of him. Finding her out of breath, he said: “Why is it, O 'A'isha, that you are out of breath? I said: There is nothing. He said: Tell me or the Subtle and the Aware would inform me” (Sahih Muslim 974). He used the Name for what was hidden in his own house. 22:63 shows it in the open: rain falls and the earth turns green, and al-Sa'di explains the Most Subtle there as the One who reaches what is inside things and brings good to His servant and keeps harm away by subtle ways people cannot see.
Arabic:
