Who Did Allah Warn Adam About?
He warned him about Iblis (Satan), saying that he will try to get them expelled from Paradise. "So We cautioned, 'O Adam! This is surely an enemy to you and to your wife. So do not let him drive you both out of Paradise, for you, O Adam, would then suffer hardship'" (Surah Ta-Ha 20:117).
1. A Warning Given Before Any Deception Occurred |
Allah did not wait for Iblis to act before warning Adam (20:117); Adam had also been told not to approach the forbidden tree, covered in What Did Allah Tell Adam Not to Approach in Paradise? Adam was given full knowledge of the threat in advance, so his eventual mistake cannot be attributed to a lack of warning.
2. Named as an Enemy From the Very Start |
Allah's wording is direct and unambiguous: Iblis is called an enemy to both Adam and his wife explicitly, not a mere temptation to be cautious around. This framing establishes the relationship between humanity and Iblis as adversarial from the very first generation, a hostility rooted in his earlier refusal to prostrate, covered in Why Did Iblis Refuse to Prostrate Before Adam?
3. A Warning That Went Unheeded |
Despite this explicit warning, Iblis succeeded in deceiving Adam into approaching the forbidden tree, an event that led directly to their expulsion, covered in Why Were Adam and His Wife Expelled From Paradise? The outcome underscores how forgetfulness and momentary weakness, not disbelief, were what led Adam astray despite knowing exactly who and what to guard against.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Qurtubi, on why hardship is addressed to Adam alone (20:117): “He singled him out in mentioning hardship and did not address it to both of them, teaching us that a wife's maintenance falls upon her husband. From that day, women's maintenance fell upon husbands. Just as Eve's maintenance fell upon Adam, so the maintenance of her daughters falls upon Adam's sons by virtue of marriage.” See Adam and his wife's expulsion from Paradise.
