How Did Her People React When Mary Returned Carrying Her Child?
The people were astonished that virgin Mary could have a child because they knew she was not married, and her mother and father were decent people. They assumed she had done something terrible.
(Then she returned to her people, carrying him. They said ˹in shock˺, “O Mary! You have certainly done a horrible thing! O sister of Aaron! Your father was not an indecent man, nor was your mother unchaste.”) Maryam 19: 27-28
1. The Return with the Newborn Child |
With steadfast faith in Allah's divine plan, Maryam walked back to her community carrying infant Jesus in her arms. She did not conceal her return or run away, displaying exceptional courage born of absolute trust in divine protection.
2. The Townspeople's Shock and Denunciation |
Upon witnessing the unmarried Maryam with a baby, the people erupted in astonishment and outrage. They proclaimed that she had committed something unprecedented, atrocious, and beyond comprehension (shay'an fariyya).
3. Invoking the Pious Lineage of Imran |
The people reminded Maryam of her righteous ancestry, addressing her as "sister of Aaron" and pointing out that neither her father was an evil man nor was her mother unchaste. They could not reconcile her saintly heritage with what they presumed to be immoral conduct.
4. Clarification of "Sister of Aaron" |
In authentic hadith, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) clarified that the Israelites frequently named their sons and daughters after their past prophets and righteous ancestors, like Prophet Aaron (Harun), brother of Musa, (Sahih Muslim 2135); some tafsir scholars add that she was likened to him in piety and devotion.
5. The Quranic Vindication Against Slander |
Surah An-Nisa severely rebukes those among the Israelites who slandered Maryam with "a great falsehood." The Quran definitively establishes her absolute innocence, turning the false accusation into an eternal testament to her purity and endurance.
Scholarly Insight: The townspeople's reaction illustrates the rapid rush to judgment in human societies when confronted with the unexpected, emphasizing the need for verified truth over superficial assumptions. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Maryam.
