What Was Mary Commanded to Do During the Pangs of Childbirth?
After Jesus pbuh was born, He commanded his mother ( by inspiration from Allah) several things:
(So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, ‘I have vowed silence to the Most Compassionate, so I am not talking to anyone today.’”) Maryam 19:26
Do not despair.
Eat and drink. ((So eat and drink)
Put your heart at ease and go out with your son.
Do not talk or argue your case with the people; rather, be silent as a vow to Allah. It is as if He said: let me do the talking: (I have vowed silence to the Most Compassionate, so I am not talking to anyone today.’)
1. Physical Nourishment and Mental Relief |
The divine instructions began with practical physical and emotional relief: Maryam was told to eat from the fresh dates, drink from the running stream, and "cool her eyes" (qarri 'aynan), an Arabic idiom conveying complete tranquility, delight, and peace of mind.
2. The Vow of Silence (Sawm al-Kalam) |
Maryam was explicitly instructed that if she encountered any human being, she should declare through gesture that she had vowed a fast to the Most Merciful and would not speak to any person that day. In earlier sacred laws, fasting encompassed abstaining from speech as well as food.
3. Wisdom Behind Withholding Verbal Defense |
The wisdom of this silence was profound: human words could never convince a suspicious crowd of a virgin birth. Had Maryam argued, people would have dismissed her claims as fabrications. By remaining silent, she preserved her dignity and prepared the stage for a divine proof that no skeptic could deny.
4. Prophetic Dignity in the Face of Falsehood |
Maryam's conduct reflects the universal prophetic guidance that when faced with baseless accusations and provocative dispute, silence is far superior to futile argument. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) instructed believers to speak good or remain silent, safeguarding faith through restraint.
5. Entrusting the Vindication to Allah Alone |
By submitting to the vow of silence, Maryam placed her reputation entirely in the hands of her Lord. Her silence allowed the miracle to unfold through her infant son, who spoke from the cradle to vindicate her chastity and proclaim his prophetic calling before all witnesses.
Scholarly Insight: Maryam's vow of silence demonstrates that there are moments when human explanations cannot resolve suspicion, and true wisdom lies in holding one's tongue and entrusting vindication to Allah. Explore the surrounding verses in the tafsir of Surah Maryam.
