When Did the Revelation Begin, at What Age, and in Which Month?
1. Scholars state that the duration of the true dreams was six months, as mentioned above, and therefore the beginning of the prophecy with the true vision in sleep, occurred in the month of his birth, Rabi Al-Awal, at the age of forty years, and the beginning of the revelation of wakefulness in Ramadan of the same year.
2. The scholars agree that the start of the revelation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was at the age of forty.
3. Historians have differed in determining the month in which Allah honored His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by sending the revelation to him, and it is more appropriate in what is stated in the Qur’an and Sunnah to say the following:
a. The Qur’an told us that the revelation of the Qur’an in the month of Ramadan
( Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed )
b. It specifies on which night the Quran was revealed As Allah Almighty says:
( Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory)
It is well known that the ‘night of glory’ Laylat al-Qadr is in Ramadan, and it is intended in the following Ayah: ( Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺.)
c. The Prophet’s Sunnah reflected that the Night of Destiny falls on the last ten of Ramadan, as in the hadith about Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.”
And in another narration of this Hadith:
“Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” )
d. The Prophet’s Sunnah showed that the revelation of the Qur’an was on Monday, and in the hadith of Abu Qatada al-Harith ibn Rab’i, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It was the day on which I was born, and on which I was commissioned with prophethood, or revelation was sent to me.”
This means that the revelation was when he was forty years old, and the beginning of the revelation was on Monday in the month of Ramadan, and on the Night of Power which falls in Witr from the last ten days.
e. Professor Al-Mubarakfoori relays in his book “Al-Raheeq Almakhtoum” that in Ramadan of the year in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) received his mission, Monday fell on (the seventh, fourteenth, twenty-first, and twenty-eighth days) and based on the texts, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent the revelation on the twenty-first day of Ramadan at night.
1. The Six-Month Preliminary Phase: True Dreams in Rabi' al-Awwal |
Aisha said: "The first revelation that came to the Messenger of Allah was true dreams in sleep; he never saw a dream but it came true like the break of dawn" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3). The scholar's answer says these dreams lasted six months, so they began in Rabi' al-Awwal, the month of his birth, when he had completed forty years.
2. Good Dreams as a Part of Prophethood |
The Prophet said: "A good dream is one of forty-six parts of prophethood" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6989). Narrations differ in the number; one in Sahih Muslim has forty-five (2263).
3. The Direct Descent of Gabriel in Ramadan |
Ibn Kathir says the well-known view is that he was sent in Ramadan, as Ubayd ibn Umayr and Ibn Ishaq stated, Ibn Ishaq citing "Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed" (2:185). In Ibn Ishaq's account, Jibril came to him while he was at Hira in the month of Ramadan. For the day, Ibn Kathir records al-Waqidi's report of the seventeenth and another view of the twenty-fourth; the scholar here cites al-Mubarakfuri's reckoning of the twenty-first.
4. Harmony Between the Two Historical Milestones |
Ibn Kathir records both views: that prophethood began in Rabi' al-Awwal, as reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), and the well-known view that it began in Ramadan. The scholar's answer joins them: the true dreams began in Rabi' al-Awwal, and the angel came with the Quran in Ramadan.
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir examines the disputed month of the Quran's descent (44:3): “Whoever says that it was the night of mid-Sha'ban, as reported from Ikrimah, has gone far from the mark, for the Quran explicitly states that it was in Ramadan.” Of a report about lifespans being determined from Sha'ban to Sha'ban, he says: “It is a report with the Companion missing from its chain, and a report of this kind cannot be used to oppose the revealed texts.” See the date of the first Quranic revelation.
