Who Was the First Person to Believe in the Prophet (PBUH)?
1 The wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the mother of the believers, Khadija bint Khuwaylid, may Allah be pleased with her, was the first among the women to embrace Islam.
2. The first among the bondsmen to embrace Islam was Zayd ibn Haritha ibn Sharhabil al-Kalbi, and he was a bondsman owned by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
3. The first of the boys to embrace Islam was his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib - and he was sponsored by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
4. The first of the men to embrace Islam was his close and great friend Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and the narrators of the Seerah mention that the aforementioned people converted on the first day of the call.
5 . After that, Abu Bakr was active in the call to Islam, and he was a man who was well known and liked with a very pleasant character, and he called those close to him, so those who accepted his call and embraced Islam were: Uthman ibn Affan al-Umayyad, Zubair ibn al-Awwam al-Asadi, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (both of Banu Zuhrah), and Talha ibn Obaidullah al-Timi. These eight who preceded the people were the first generation and the vanguard of Islam.
6. One of the first Muslims was Bilal ibn Rabah al-Habshi.
7. Among the people who followed the aforementioned and therefore were pioneers: the Trustee of this Ummah Abu Ubaydah Amer ibn al-Jarrah of Bani al-Harith ibn Fihr, Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Asad and al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam (both of Banu Makhzum), Uthman ibn Maz’un and his brothers Qudamah and Abdullah, Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf, Sa’id ibn Zaid al-Adawi, his wife Fatima bint al-Khattab al-Adawiya, sister of Omar ibn al-Khattab, Khabab ibn al-Art, Abdullah ibn Mas’ud al-Hudhali, and others; these are the first forerunners, from all the clans of Quraysh.
8. These had secretly embraced Islam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) met with them secretly and guided them to religion because the call was still at its beginning and it was undisclosed and involved individuals, and the revelation had become uninterrupted after the revelation of the beginning Ayat of Mudathir.
1. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid: The Absolute First Believer |
Historical consensus affirms that Khadijah was the very first human being to embrace Islam. When the Prophet returned trembling from Hira, she believed him instantly without hesitation, declaring: "By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you!" She consoled him with her emotional strength, wisdom, and entire fortune.
2. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: The Foremost Among Free Adult Men | أبو بكر الصديق: رائد السابقين من الرجال الأحرار
Among free adult men, Abu Bakr was the first to accept Islam. In a report by Ibn Ishaq, the Prophet noted that everyone he invited hesitated at first, except Abu Bakr, who responded immediately without wavering. Abu Bakr immediately brought major figures like Uthman, Az-Zubayr, and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf to Islam.
3. Ali ibn Abi Talib: The Pioneer Among Youth and Children |
Ali ibn Abi Talib was living in the Prophet's household to relieve his father Abu Talib's financial burden. Aged around ten, Ali observed the Prophet and Khadijah praying, accepted the faith without consulting anyone, and became the pioneering youth of the Ummah.
4. Zayd ibn Harithah and Bilal: The Universal Scope of the Call |
Zayd ibn Harithah, the Prophet's freed client who chose to stay with Muhammad over his biological family, was the first among freed servants. Bilal ibn Rabah, who bore brutal torture in Mecca's burning sands chanting "Ahad, Ahad", was the first among the enslaved, proving Islam embraced all social strata.
Scholarly Insight: The diversity of the earliest believers - encompassing an elderly noblewoman, an esteemed merchant, a young boy, a freedman, and an enslaved Ethiopian - demonstrates the universal appeal of Islam from its inception. Read more in the tafsir of Surah At-Tawbah.
