What is death?
Death is the inevitable end of all human beings, and death does not mean the end, but the transition of the faithful human to a better life, when the sinner moves to a worse life, which is Hell-Fire.
The Reality of Death in the Holy Quran |
1. The Divine Custody of Souls
(It is Allah Who calls back the souls of people upon their death as well as the souls of the living during their sleep. Then He keeps those for whom He has ordained death, and releases the others until their appointed time. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.) [Az-Zummar 39: 42]
2. The Fixed Appointed Time
(But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.) [Al-Munafiqun 63: 11]
3. Destined by Allah's Will
(No soul can ever die without Allah’s Will at the destined time.) [Al-Imran 3: 145]
4. The Inevitable Taste and Reward
(Every soul will taste death. And you will only receive your full reward on the Day of Judgment.) [Al-Imran 3: 185]
5. The Trial of Life and Lack of Immortality
(We have not granted immortality to any human before you O Prophet: so if you die, will they live forever? Every soul will taste death. And We test you O humanity with good and evil as a trial, then to Us you will all be returned.) [Al-Anbiya 21: 34-35]
6. The Ultimate Return
(Every soul will taste death, then to Us you will all be returned.) [Al-Ankabut 29: 57]
Scholarly Insight: Islamic scholars traditionally define death not as extinction, but strictly as the separation of the soul from the physical body. Based on the consensus of early Islamic theology and the prophetic traditions (Hadith), the phase immediately following death is known as the "Barzakh" (the interstice or barrier). It acts as a transitional realm where the soul resides until the Day of Resurrection. This confirms the Quranic reality that life on earth is a temporary testing ground, while the true, eternal life begins only after crossing the threshold of death.
Frequently Asked Questions |

No, death does not mean the absolute end. Instead, it is a transition where the faithful move to a better life in Paradise, and the sinners transition to a worse life in Hell-Fire.
Can a person's life be extended once their appointed time of death arrives?
No soul can ever die without Allah's will at its destined time. As stated in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:11), Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time finally comes.
What is the core purpose of worldly life before facing death?
