What Is the Difference Between Faith (Iman) and Islam?
Faith is the concealed deeds, while Islam is the apparent acts, and if either Islam or faith is mentioned alone, each of them indicates both the apparent and hidden acts.
1. Faith Is More Specific Than Islam |
Allah says: Some of the nomadic Arabs say, We believe. Say, O Prophet, You have not believed. But say, We have submitted, for faith has not yet entered your hearts (49:14). Ibn Kathir explains that Allah rebuked the Bedouins who, as soon as they entered Islam, claimed the station of faith for themselves before faith had settled in their hearts; and that this verse shows that Iman is more specific than Islam, which is the view of Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. The hadith of Jibril shows the same, he adds, since Jibril asked about Islam, then about Iman, then about Ihsan, rising from the general to the more specific.
2. A Believer, or a Muslim? |
Ibn Kathir cites the hadith of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas: the Messenger of Allah gave to some men and left out one of them, and Sa’d said: O Messenger of Allah, you gave so and so and left out so and so, though he is a believer. The Prophet said: Or a Muslim, and he repeated it each time Sa’d said it, three times; then he said: I give to some men and leave one who is dearer to me, fearing that they may be thrown on their faces into the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 27, Sahih Muslim 150). Ibn Kathir explains that the Prophet distinguished between the Muslim and the believer, which shows that Iman is more specific than Islam, and that the man was a Muslim, not a hypocrite.
3. The Believers in Full |
The next verse describes the faith that had not yet entered the Bedouins’ hearts: The true believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, never doubting, and strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. They are the ones true in faith (49:15). Ibn Kathir explains: the believers in full are those who did not doubt or waver but stayed firm on pure belief, gave their lives and the most precious of their wealth in obedience to Allah, and are truthful when they say they are believers, unlike some Bedouins who had nothing of the religion but the outward word. How faith and deeds belong together is explained in whether faith is sufficient without good deeds.
4. The Two Answers in the Hadith of Jibril |
When Jibril asked about each separately, the Prophet answered: Islam is that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, pay the zakat, fast Ramadan and make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able; and Iman is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers and the Last Day, and believe in destiny, its good and its bad (Sahih Muslim 8). These are explained in the five pillars of Islam and the pillars of faith.
Scholarly Insight: The scholar explains that faith is the hidden deeds and Islam the apparent ones, and that each covers both when mentioned alone; Ibn Kathir explains from 49:14 that Iman is more specific than Islam, the view of Ahl as-Sunnah, as the hadith of Sa’d shows (Sahih al-Bukhari 27).
