Is faith sufficient without performing good deeds?
Faith is a combination of words, deeds, and faith (belief). Deeds are an important part of faith whether they increase or decrease. Allah the Almighty does not accept any deed unless the person doing it is a believer.
The Inseparability of Faith and Deeds |
1. Good Deeds Without Faith are Void
(Then We will turn to whatever good deeds they did, reducing them to scattered dust.) [Al-Furqan 25: 23]
2. Faith is Incomplete Without Action
There are Ayaat in the Noble Quran in which having faith and performing good deeds are mentioned together. Therefore, faith is not complete without good deeds, and good deeds without being a believer are not accepted.
3. The Ultimate Reward for Faith Combined with Deeds
(Those who believe and do good will be admitted into Gardens, under which rivers flow, to stay there forever by the Will of their Lord, where they will be greeted with "Peace!") [Ibrahim 14: 23]
(Whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, We will surely bless them with a good life, and We will certainly reward them according to the best of their deeds.) [An-Nahl 16: 97]
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Creed (Aqeedah), according to the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, faith (Iman) is defined comprehensively as belief in the heart, a statement by the tongue, and action by the limbs. Faith is not merely a static internal conviction; it is a dynamic state that increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience. Therefore, righteous deeds are the natural, necessary fruit of a living faith. Claiming to have true faith while willfully abandoning all physical acts of worship contradicts the very definition of Iman, just as performing good deeds without the foundation of correct belief renders those actions void in the Hereafter.
