How Did Thamud Challenge Their Prophet Saleh?
They gathered and killed the she-camel. “But they roused a companion of theirs, so he dared to kill her” (Surah Al-Qamar 54:29). “Then they killed the she-camel, defying their Lord’s command, and challenged Salih, ‘Bring us what you threaten us with, if you are truly one of the messengers'” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:77).
1. A Collective Decision, Carried Out by One Hand |
Surah Al-Qamar 54:29 shows the people rousing “a companion of theirs” to carry out the killing, while Surah Al-A’raf 7:77 attributes the act to the group as a whole. This dual framing, one individual’s hands but a collective decision, is developed further in What Crime Did the People of Thamud Commit?
2. Defiance Followed by a Direct Taunt |
After killing the she-camel that Saleh had explicitly warned them not to harm, covered in What Miracle Did Allah Send to the People of Saleh?, they did not stop at defiance; they mockingly demanded he produce the punishment he had promised. This taunt shows a people who had moved past disbelief into open, deliberate provocation.
3. Breaking the Command Not to Harm Her | انتهاك الأمر بعدم إيذائها
Of everything Thamud were permitted regarding the she-camel, harming her was expressly forbidden, and her turn to drink had to be respected. Their choice to kill her, violating the prohibition against harming her, marks the final, deliberate rejection of Allah’s command not to harm her.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Qamar 54:29 and Surah Al-A’raf 7:77 record Thamud killing the she-camel and taunting Saleh to bring the promised punishment. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-A’raf.
