How Did Allah Cause Moses’s Mother to Get Her Child Back and Nurse Him?
Allah caused him to refuse all wet-nurses, so that he was starving. His sister who had been keeping track of his whereabouts suggested to them that she knew someone who can nurse him. When they agreed, she brought her mother to him, and so the mother and the child were reunited.
(And she said to his sister, “Keep track of him!” So she watched him from a distance, while they were unaware. And We had caused him to refuse all wet-nurses at first, so his sister suggested, “Shall I direct you to a family who will bring him up for you and take good care of him?” This is how We returned him to his mother so that her heart would be put at ease, and not grieve, and that she would know that Allah’s promise is ˹always˺ true. But most people do not know.) Al-Qasas 28:11-13
(˹Remember˺ when your sister came along and proposed, “Shall I direct you to someone who will nurse him?” So We reunited you with your mother so that her heart would be put at ease, and she would not grieve.) Ta-Ha 20:40
1. A Sister Sent to Watch From a Distance |
Before the reunion could happen, Musa’s mother instructed his sister to keep track of him, and she followed his whereabouts closely enough to trace him into Pharaoh’s own household, all without anyone there realizing she was connected to the child. This quiet surveillance is what made the sister’s later intervention possible at exactly the right moment.
2. Refusing Every Wet-Nurse by Divine Design |
The Ayah states plainly that Allah caused Musa to refuse every wet-nurse offered to him, framing his hunger and rejection not as ordinary infant fussiness but as a deliberate divine cause. This detail matters because it is what created the opening for his sister’s suggestion to be accepted at all, Pharaoh’s household genuinely needed a solution.
3. A Suggestion Offered at Exactly the Right Moment |
With the household struggling to find anyone the infant would accept, his sister steps forward with an offer: a family who would bring him up well and take good care of him. She frames this purely as a helpful recommendation, giving no indication that she is Musa’s own sister or that the family she names is his mother’s household.
4. A Reunion With a Stated Purpose |
The Ayah does not simply report that Musa was returned to his mother; it explains why: so that her heart would be put at ease, so she would not grieve, and so that she would know Allah’s promise is true. This ties the reunion directly back to the anguish she had endured while separated from him, resolving it as the fulfillment of what she had been told from the start.
5. Recalled Later as a Direct Address to Musa Himself |
Surah Ta-Ha 20:40 revisits this same event, but this time Allah recounts it directly to Musa as an adult, reminding him personally of the favor shown to his mother through his sister’s intervention. Repeating the episode as part of a direct address years later underscores how central this early act of care was among the signs of Allah’s continuous protection over his life.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Qasas 28:11-13 describes how Musa’s sister, watching him from a distance, arranged his return to his own mother after he refused every other wet-nurse, and Surah Ta-Ha 20:40 recalls the same event directly to Musa as an adult. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Qasas and the tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha.
