How Did the Mother of Moses Endure the Pain of Losing Her Child?
Her heart became empty of everything except for the mention of Moses, peace be upon him. She almost told people that she lost her son, but Allah Almighty made her heart firm. The reason for her patience is that she was inspired to cast him, and Allah the Almighty revealed to her that her son would return to her.
(And the heart of Moses’ mother ached so much that she almost gave away his identity, had We not reassured her heart in order for her to have faith ˹in Allah’s promise˺.) Al-Qasas 28:10
1. A Heart Emptied of Everything Else |
The Ayah describes her heart as becoming “faarighan,” empty, so completely consumed by thoughts of Musa that nothing else occupied it. This is not a passing worry but total preoccupation, the natural response of a mother who has just placed her infant son into a river to save him from being killed.
2. On the Verge of Revealing the Secret |
The grief grew so overwhelming that she nearly announced to the people around her what she had done and who the child was, a disclosure that could have put both her and Musa in immediate danger given the killing policy already in force. The Ayah’s word “kaadat,” she almost did it, shows how close this moment of anguish came to undoing the very secrecy that had kept him safe.
3. A Divine Reassurance Preventing Disaster |
What stopped her from speaking was not her own willpower alone; the Ayah attributes it directly to Allah, “had We not reassured her heart.” This intervention is described using the image of binding or steadying the heart, language that conveys active, deliberate support rather than the mother simply managing to compose herself unaided.
4. Faith Named as the Purpose |
The Ayah closes this verse with a stated reason for the reassurance, “in order for her to have faith,” directly connecting her steadied heart to her standing among the believers. Her endurance was not simply about surviving the grief, it was inseparable from trusting Allah’s earlier promise.
5. Patience Rooted in a Prior Promise |
Her ability to hold on traces back to what she had already been told: Allah’s earlier inspiration that if she placed him in the river, He would return him to her and make him one of the messengers. Her endurance here is the direct continuation of that original promise being tested, and ultimately upheld.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Qasas 28:10 describes Musa’s mother’s heart as nearly breaking under grief to the point of almost revealing his identity, held firm only by Allah’s own reassurance so that she would remain among the believers. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Qasas.
