What Peace Did Allah Instill in Yusuf While His Brothers Plotted Against Him?
Allah had inspired His Prophet Yusuf that “you will confront them later for this heinous act, and you will tell them about it, while they do not know.” That was a sign from Allah to him that he would survive what happened to him, and that Allah would reunite him with his family and brothers while he was in a position of glory and empowerment on earth. The lesson learned here is Allah Almighty’s mercy towards His Prophet Yusuf, and it also tells us that with every calamity that descends on a person devoted to Allah, Allah will send peace and serenity with it. Therefore, the Quran does not report that the young Yusuf cried or screamed, because in fact that did not happen, due to the serenity that Allah sent to Yusuf. “He responded, ‘No! Your souls must have tempted you to do something ˹evil˺. So ˹I can only endure with˺ beautiful patience! It is Allah’s help that I seek to bear your claims'” (Surah Yusuf 12:18).
1. A Promise Given at the Lowest Moment |
This revelation arrived at the exact moment of Yusuf’s greatest vulnerability, alone in a well, betrayed by his own brothers, with no rescue yet in sight. Ibn Kathir explains that Allah revealed this to Yusuf in that narrow moment to comfort and steady him, as part of His sending ease in hardship: the reassurance did not come after the trial ended but while it was at its worst, establishing a pattern repeated throughout the surah of relief arriving in the depths of hardship rather than only after it.
2. Silence in the Text as Its Own Kind of Evidence |
The answer explains that the Quran does not mention Yusuf crying or screaming because it did not happen, owing to the serenity Allah sent down on him. The narrative shows his inner state through what it leaves out as much as through what it includes. This literary restraint mirrors the broader emotional discipline the surah portrays throughout Yusuf’s life, calm reliance on Allah even in circumstances that would justify visible panic.
3. A Revelation That Set Up the Story’s Ending |
This promise, that Yusuf would tell his brothers of their deed while they remained unaware, is fulfilled precisely as described years later in Egypt. Its fulfillment is covered in the questions on Yusuf’s brothers coming to Egypt later in this subcategory, closing a narrative loop the Quran opened here, at what seemed like the story’s darkest turn.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Tabari records a different explanation of the brothers’ unawareness in the revelation given to Yusuf (12:15): “Some interpreters said that Allah revealed to Yusuf that he would tell his brothers what they had done to him, including throwing him into the well, selling him, and their other actions, while his brothers were unaware that Allah had revealed this to him.” See also what Allah taught Yusuf.
