What Did Allah Teach Yusuf About Dream Interpretation?
Allah taught him how to interpret visions, as He taught him what accounts and true visions mean, and this was how he was later saved from prison, as will come in later questions. “And so will your Lord choose you, and teach you the interpretation of dreams, and perfect His favour upon you and the descendants of Yaqoub, just as He once perfected it upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Surely your Lord is All-Knowing, All-Wise” (Surah Yusuf 12:6). “The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, ‘Take good care of him, perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.’ This is how We established Yusuf in the land, so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah’s Will always prevails, but most people do not know” (Surah Yusuf 12:21).
1. A Gift Promised Before It Was Given | هبة وُعد بها قبل أن تُمنح
Allah promises Yusuf this gift immediately after his dream is described, in the same passage covered in What Was Yusuf’s Dream, and How Did His Father Respond? This sequencing shows the dream itself was the first sign of a gift that would not fully take effect until years later, planting the theme of interpretation at the very beginning of a story that would not resolve it until the very end.
2. A Family Tradition of Divine Favor |
Surah Yusuf 12:6 explicitly links this gift to the favor Allah previously perfected upon Ibrahim and Ishaq (peace be upon them), Yusuf’s own forefathers. Scholars read this as confirmation that Yusuf’s unique knowledge was not an isolated miracle but part of the same pattern of divine selection running through his family’s four generations of Prophethood: Ibrahim, Ishaq, Yaqoub (peace be upon him) and Yusuf.
3. A Skill Planted for a Purpose Beyond Yusuf Himself |
Surah Yusuf 12:21 states plainly that Allah established Yusuf in Egypt specifically “so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams,” tying his eventual position of power directly to this gift rather than treating it as incidental. His arrival in Egypt provides the setting, as explained in who bought Yusuf in Egypt. The verse’s closing phrase, that Allah’s will always prevails though most people do not realize it, frames the entire episode, being sold into slavery, imprisoned unjustly, as part of a plan whose purpose only became visible in hindsight. This raises the related question of destiny and choice, as explained in predestination and human free will.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Sa’di gives a broader meaning for the knowledge promised to Yusuf (12:6): “Explaining dreams and explaining what truthful accounts lead to, such as heavenly scriptures and the like.” On Allah’s knowledge and wisdom, he writes: “His knowledge encompasses things and what the hearts of His servants contain of goodness and other matters. He gives each what His wisdom and praiseworthiness require, for He is wise, placing things in their proper positions and assigning them their proper places.” See Yusuf’s teaching while he was imprisoned.
