Why Did Allah Almighty Raise Mount Tur Above the Heads of the Children of Israel?
When Moses went to meet Allah, Allah gave him the Tablets containing the Torah. When he returned to the Children of Israel, he instructed them to act upon what was in the Tablets, but they refused to acknowledge it until Allah raised the mountain above them so that it overshadowed their heads, and they thought it would fall on them.
Moses said to them: Allah tells you, if you do not accept the Torah with everything it contains, He will crush you beneath this mountain. They prostrated themselves on the ground, and He then said, "Hold firmly to the Scripture We have given you, and observe its teachings."
(And ˹remember˺ when We took a covenant from you and raised the mountain above you ˹saying˺, "Hold firmly to that ˹Scripture˺ which We have given you and observe its teachings so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺." Yet you turned away afterwards. Had it not been for Allah's grace and mercy upon you, you would have certainly been of the losers.) Al-Baqarah 2:63-64
(And ˹remember˺ when We raised the mountain over them as if it were a cloud and they thought it would fall on them. ˹We said,˺ "Hold firmly to that ˹Scripture˺ which We have given you and observe its teachings so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.") Al-A'raf 7:171
1. Given the Torah, Then Refusing to Accept It | إعطاء التوراة يقابله رفضٌ لقبولها
After Musa received the complete Law written in the Tablets, he returned and instructed his people to act upon it, only to face outright refusal to even acknowledge it. This rejection of the very Law sent to guide them is what led directly to the mountain being raised.
2. A Mountain Suspended Like a Looming Cloud |
The mountain is described as raised above them like a shadowing cloud, close enough that they genuinely believed it would fall and crush them. This is a striking, visceral image, an entire mountain suspended over their heads, deliberately intense enough to make refusal feel physically dangerous.
3. An Ultimatum Tied Directly to Survival |
Musa delivers the choice in blunt, unmistakable terms, accept the Torah with everything it contains, or be crushed beneath the mountain. There is no ambiguity or softened language here, the stakes are made as clear and immediate as possible.
4. Prostration Under Threat, Not Voluntary Devotion |
Their response, falling prostrate on the ground, comes only once the mountain's fall seemed genuinely imminent. This detail is worth noting honestly: their initial acceptance of the covenant was compelled by immediate fear, not a freely chosen change of heart, setting up why the later verse notes they turned away from it again afterward.
5. The Actual Command: Hold Firmly and Remember |
Once the mountain is raised, the instruction given is not simply "accept" but "hold firmly to what We have given you, and remember what is in it, so perhaps you will become mindful." The command asks for active engagement with the content of the Scripture, not passive submission under duress alone.
6. A Later Reminder of Their Broken Promise |
Surah Al-Baqarah adds a closing note absent from the parallel account in Al-A'raf: "Yet you turned away afterwards," saved from being counted among the losers only by Allah's own grace and mercy. This addition confirms that even a covenant accepted under such extreme circumstances did not guarantee lasting compliance.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:63-64 and Surah Al-A'raf 7:171 record Allah raising Mount Tur above the Children of Israel like a looming cloud after they refused to accept the Torah, until they prostrated in fear and accepted the covenant to hold firmly to it. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
