What Was the Character of the Prophet (PBUH) Like?
Before the Revelation, he was called ‘Al-Ameen’ (the Trustworthy), because he was well known for never telling lies or tricks.
(And you are truly ˹a man˺ of outstanding character.) Al-Qalam 68:4
(It is out of Allah’s mercy that you ˹O Prophet˺ have been lenient with them. Had you been cruel or hard-hearted, they would have certainly abandoned you.) Al-Imran 3:159
Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) was asked about the character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and she said: “His character was the Quran”. Meaning that you find whatever matter that the Quran encouraged or commanded to be done, in his character, his behavior and his deeds.
1. Aisha's Comprehensive Definition: "His Character Was the Quran" |
When Sa'd ibn Hisham asked Mother of the Believers Aisha about the moral character of the Prophet, she delivered the most profound summary in Islamic thought: "Do you not read the Quran? His character was the Quran." Whatever the Quran commanded, he embodied; whatever it forbade, he avoided.
2. Unsurpassed Gentleness and Compassion |
Surah Ali 'Imran affirms that Allah imbued Muhammad's nature with supreme gentleness: "It is by mercy from Allah that you were gentle with them. And if you had been rude and harsh-hearted, they would have disbanded from around you." He never repaid evil with evil, but pardoned generously.
3. Humility with the Weak and Service to Family |
Despite his supreme status, the Prophet lived with extraordinary humility: he mended his own shoes, patched his clothes, milked his goats, and served his family with household chores. He sat on the floor with slaves, accepted invitations from the poor, and comforted orphans.
4. Forbearance and Restraint at the Peak of Power |
The pinnacle of his character was demonstrated at the Conquest of Mecca. Entering the city with bowed head in total submission to Allah, he faced the very enemies who had persecuted him and killed his companions and, according to the well-known seerah report, declared: "Go, for you are free!"
5. The Universal Moral Paradigm for All Humanity |
Surah Al-Ahzab designates the Prophet as the supreme, timeless role model (Uswah Hasanah) for every believer seeking Allah and the Last Day. His character harmonized power with humility, justice with mercy, and leadership with selflessness.
Scholarly Insight: Aisha's description "his character was the Quran" means that every moral principle inscribed in the divine scripture found its practical, visible realization in the actions and words of Prophet Muhammad. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Qalam.
