Where Was the Prophet (PBUH) Buried?
The companions differed as to where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should be buried, and Abu Bakr said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: (Allah never takes a prophet except in the place where He loves for him to be buried) (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1018). So Abu Talhah removed the bed on which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) died, dug under it, and made the grave a lahd in the house of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). They washed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) without stripping him of his clothes, then shrouded him in three garments, and the people entered the room in groups, ten at a time, praying over him with no one leading them: first his clan, then the Emigrants, then the Ansar; the women prayed after the men, then the boys; then he was buried (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Note: The earlier published wording quoted the hadith as “Every prophet was buried where he died”, the wording of Ibn Majah’s narration (1628), whose chain is weak; the wording above is at-Tirmidhi’s (1018), graded sahih by al-Albani. The earlier wording also put the burial before the funeral prayers; the reports say the people prayed over him in groups and then he was buried (Ibn Ishaq, quoted by Ibn Kathir), so the order was corrected.
O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.
1. Passing Away in the Chamber of Aisha |
He died on a Monday, as Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports (quoted by Ibn Kathir), in Aisha's room, resting between her chest and her throat (Sahih al-Bukhari 4449), and his last words were "O Allah, the Highest Companion" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4463). When Abu Bakr announced his death to the people, he recited: "You ˹O Prophet˺ will certainly die, and they will die too" (39:30), and "Muhammad is no more than a messenger" (3:144) (Sahih al-Bukhari 3668).
2. The Companions' Initial Disagreement Over Burial |
The companions differed on where to bury him: in al-Waqidi's report quoted by Ibn Kathir, some said in al-Baqi', some by his pulpit, and some in his place of prayer, until Abu Bakr told them what he had heard.
3. Abu Bakr Resolves the Matter Through Prophetic Sunnah |
Abu Bakr settled it: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: Allah never takes a prophet except in the place where He loves for him to be buried. Bury him where his bed is" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1018, graded sahih by al-Albani).
4. The Digging of the Blessed Grave |
Abu Talhah Zayd ibn Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), who dug graves with a side niche (lahd) for the people of Medina, dug his grave, as Ibn Kathir reports from Ibn Ishaq. He was shrouded in three white Yemeni cotton garments, with no shirt or turban among them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1264), and the people prayed over him in groups before the burial.
5. Burial of Abu Bakr and Umar by His Side |
Abu Bakr was later buried beside him, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was dying, asked Aisha's permission to be buried with his two companions, and she granted it (Sahih al-Bukhari 3700).
Scholarly Insight: Aisha reports that the Prophet ﷺ said during his final illness (Sahih al-Bukhari 1330): “Allah cursed the Jews and Christians who took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.” She adds: “Were it not for that, they would have made his grave conspicuous, but I fear that it might be taken as a place of worship.” See worshipping Allah and honoring the Prophet.
