Surah Al-Qalam is the 68th chapter of the Quran, containing 52 verses. Revealed in Makkah among the earliest chapters, it opens with an oath by the pen and what is written, defending the Prophet against his detractors’ accusations and affirming his exalted character. The surah relates the parable of the owners of a garden who vowed to harvest it without leaving a share for the poor and were punished by its destruction, warns the disbelievers of their fate, and closes by counselling the Prophet to patience, recalling the trial of Yunus (Jonah). Below you can read the full Surah Al-Qalam in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ نۤ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ }
{ نۤ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 1
1. Allah Almighty swears by the letter N and by the pen and by what people write. (Some commentators said the letter N represents the ink well because it is shaped like the letter N in Arabic. It was also said that the “pen” refers to the pen that wrote the destiny determined by Allah.) ( In a Hadith the Prophet says: “When Allah first created the pen, He said to it: ‘Write!’ It replied: ‘What should I write, O Lord?’ Allah said: ‘Write down destiny and what will be forever.’” (Reported by Al-Tirmizi and Ahmad).
{ مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 4
4. You have noble morals and religion; for the holy Prophet (peace be upon him), as Aisha, the mother of believers, said, followed the teachings of the Quran in his morality.

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 9

(It was said that the meaning is as follows: Al-Walid ibn Mugheera had his nose cut off by a sword at the battle of Badr and was thus recognized by all as the one who was ungrateful for the blessings of Allah. Allah wanted to humiliate him as a punishment for his arrogance and tyranny.)
{ إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَابَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُواْ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ }
{ بَلَوْنَاهُمْ } { أَصْحَابَ }

17. It was said that Abu Jahl asked the people of Quraish, when they went out to fight the Muslims at Badr, to take ropes with them to tie up the Muslim prisoners, for they did not doubt that they would be victorious. Allah almighty says that He tried the unbelievers of Makkah by bestowing on them many blessings and generous gifts to determine whether they would thank Him for these favours by following the Messenger of Allah, or would they disbelieve in Allah and deny His Messenger thus incurring the punishment of Allah, just as He tried the owners of the orchard who denied Allah’s beneficence to them and therefore decided not to pay alms to the poor. Allah Almighty punished them and destroyed their orchard most frightfully. For they had sworn to pick the fruit of the orchard on the next day so that no poor or needy person would know about it .
{ وَلاَ يَسْتَثْنُونَ }
Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 18
18. They did not exclude any mishaps in their oath by saying, “If Allah wills” (or they did not save the portion of the needy as their father had asked them to do).
{ فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ }
{ طَآئِفٌ } { نَآئِمُونَ }

{ صَارِمِينَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 22

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 24
24. They told one another: “Do not allow any of the poor to come into your orchard.”
{ وَغَدَوْاْ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ }
{ قَادِرِينَ }

{ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ }

{ يَتَلاَوَمُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 31

{ رَاغِبُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 33
33. This is the punishment in this life below which Allah inflicts upon he who disobeys Him and is mean with what He bestowed upon him and denies the poor their right. The punishment of the Hereafter is far greater and more severe, if only they knew something of Hellfire and the torture in it.
{ إِنَّ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ }
{ جَنَّاتِ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 35
35. The unbelievers of Makkah told the Muslims sarcastically: “Allah has favoured us over you in this life, therefore surely He will also favour us over you in the Hereafter. If He does not favour us, at least we shall be equal.” Allah Almighty answered them saying: “Would We make those believers who obeyed Allah equal to those criminals who disbelieved in Allah, denied His messenger, and committed disobedience and sins? No indeed! This equality could never be.
{ مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ }
Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 36
36. “What ill judgement made you believe such a thing and come to such a conclusion?
{ أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ }
{ كِتَابٌ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 37
37. “Or do you rely in your belief on a book that was sent down to you from heaven which you could study and circulate?
{ إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 38

{ أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ }
{ أَيْمَانٌ } { بَالِغَةٌ } { ٱلْقِيَامَةِ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 39
39. “Or do you have confirmed covenants from Us which are kept in trust until the Day of Resurrection that you shall attain all that you desire, ask for and judge?”
{ سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَلِكَ زَعِيمٌ }

{ أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُواْ صَادِقِينَ }
{ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ } { صَادِقِينَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 41
41. Or are there those who share their opinion and say as they themselves do that the Muslims and the criminals are equal? If that is the case, then let them bring forth their partners if they are truthful in what they say.
{ يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلاَ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 42
42. Let them bring forth their partners to help them when the terrors become extreme and the misfortunes are greater on Judgement Day. Then these polytheists are summoned to prostrate themselves as a reprimand to them for abandoning their prayers in their life on earth. But they will not be able to do so. This increases their sorrow and repentance.
{ خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُواْ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَٰلِمُونَ }
{ خَاشِعَةً } { أَبْصَارُهُمْ } { سَالِمُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 43
43. When they are summoned to prostrate themselves but are unable to do so, their eyes will be cast down in humiliation on that day, although during their life on earth they were arrogant and tyrannical. They were summoned to prostrate themselves in their earthly life when they were sound of body and full of health, yet they refused. For this Allah will punish them by making them incapable of prostrating themselves before the Almighty when He appears in His Glory and when all the believers will glorify Him by prostrating themselves before His majestic Self.
{ فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِّنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 44
44. Commit to Me, O Messenger, the affairs of those who deny the Quran and do not worry about them, for I will release you from their concerns. I will draw them on gradually and at a leisurely pace to punishment by granting them health and increasing the blessings on them. Thus, they will not know that they are being lured, but will believe that Allah has preferred them to the believers.
{ وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 45
45. I will grant them a respite and a long life so they may increase their rebellion and tyranny. Thus, the argument will be established against them. My design against the unbelievers is powerful and sound. In a Hadith the Prophet said: “Allah grants respite to the unjust, but when He seizes him He will not let him go.” (Cited in Al-Sahihain.)
{ أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْراً فَهُمْ مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ }
{ تَسْأَلُهُمْ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 46
46. You, O Mohammad, do not ask them for a wage in return for your call to them to believe in Allah, to obey Him and to do righteous deeds that they should refuse your advice for fear that they would be burdened with debt if they follow the religion you call them to.
{ أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ }
Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 47
47. Or do they have the preserved tablet which contains all the news of the unseen and in which they write all the arguments that confirm the veracity of their speech and then dispute with you concerning what they have written? Thus they dispense with responding to you.
{ فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلاَ تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 48
48. Endure patiently, O Mohammed, the harm of your people and their treating you as a liar, for Allah is on your side and He will let you and your followers have the happy ending in both life here below and the Hereafter. Do not be like the prophet Jonah (the companion of the whale) who left his people angrily and boarded the ship. The people of the ship cast lots and he was thrown into the sea and was swallowed up by a whale. The whale took him across oceans. Then, filled with anger with his people for not believing him when he called them to have faith in Allah, he cried out in the depths of the darkness: “There is no Allah but You. Glory be to You, I have done wrong.”
{ لَّوْلاَ أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ }
{ تَدَارَكَهُ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 49

{ فَٱجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ }
{ فَٱجْتَبَاهُ } { ٱلصَّالِحِينَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 50
50. But your Lord’s blessing reached him and He was chosen by Allah Who sent him His revelation and made him a messenger to carry out His Lord’s commands.
{ وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُواْ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ }
{ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 51
51. Those polytheists look at you with hatred because of their immense animosity and aggressiveness to the extent that they make you almost stumble out of their envy and loathing when they heard you recite the Quran. Their confusion concerning the Quran and their ignorance of what it contains drive them to say that Mohammad is insane.
{ وَمَا هُوَ إِلاَّ ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ }
{ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ }

Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 52
52. The Quran is only an admonition and a reminder to the universe.
