Why Did Ibrahim Ask Allah to Show Him the Resurrection? Was He in Doubt?
Ibrahim asked his Lord to show him how the resurrection happens: is it done in a specific way, or is it simply the power of Allah to say “Be” and it is? Because human nature wants to know the unknown, Ibrahim asked his Lord to show him the method of resurrecting the dead, “so that my heart will be satisfied” and would stop seeking to know what was unknown to it. Ibrahim did not have any doubt about this, as the Prophet Muhammad said, “We are more prone to doubt than Ibrahim,” meaning that if Ibrahim had any doubt, then it would be more logical for us to doubt because of our weakness; since we do not doubt, it is certain Ibrahim did not either, being stronger than us in faith. Rather, Ibrahim’s request was to increase his certainty about how the process of bringing back the dead occurs. What confirms this is that his Lord asked him, though Allah already knew him fully, “Do you not believe?” He replied, “Yes, I do, but just so my heart can be reassured,” meaning yes, he believed, and faith cannot coexist with doubt. “And remember when Abraham said, ‘My Lord! Show me how you give life to the dead.’ Allah responded, ‘Do you not believe?’ Abraham replied, ‘Yes I do, but just so my heart can be reassured.’ Allah said, ‘Then bring four birds, train them to come to you, then cut them into pieces, and scatter them on different hilltops. Then call them back, they will fly to you in haste. And so you will know that Allah is Almighty, All-Wise'” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:260).
1. Why Allah Asked a Question He Already Knew the Answer To | لماذا سأل الله سؤالا يعلم إجابته
Allah’s question, “Do you not believe?”, was never a request for information; it served to make Ibrahim’s own certainty explicit for the record, both for Ibrahim’s benefit and for every reader of this exchange since. His answer, “Yes, I do,” settles any ambiguity before the miracle itself is even described.
2. The Difference Between Belief and Certainty |
Islamic scholarship distinguishes between belief held on trust and certainty gained through direct witnessing, and Ibrahim’s request sits entirely within the second category. He already believed fully; what he sought was to move his heart from acceptance of a truth to direct experiential confirmation of it, a distinction that explains why his request carried no contradiction with his faith.
3. A Prophet’s Own Testimony About Ibrahim’s Certainty |
The hadith “We are more prone to doubt than Ibrahim” is not a claim that Prophet Muhammad himself doubted; it is a rhetorical statement establishing a hierarchy of certainty, if the weaker among believers are already free of doubt, the strongest among them, Ibrahim, certainly was as well. This teaching is used to close off any possible misreading of Ibrahim’s question as uncertainty in Allah’s power.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:260 records Ibrahim’s request to witness the resurrection firsthand, driven by a desire for certainty through direct observation rather than any doubt in Allah’s power. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
