Counted in the text of the Quran, the name Yusuf occurs 25 times in Surah Yusuf, in 24 verses: 12:4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, 21, 29, 46, 51, 56, 58, 69, 76, 77, 80, 84, 85, 87, 89, 90 (twice), 94 and 99. In 12:90 his brothers ask: Are you indeed Yusuf? He said: I am Yusuf, and this is my brother. The last mention comes when his parents entered upon him in Egypt (12:99), followed by his prayer after his parents came to Egypt. No other prophet’s name comes this often in a single surah: the name Musa occurs 136 times in the Quran, and at most 21 times in one surah, Al-A’raf. Surah Yusuf is also one of the six surahs named after prophets.
قَالُوا أَإِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا يُوسُفُ وَهَٰذَا أَخِي (سورة يوسف: 90)

بعد نص القرآن، ورد اسم يوسف في سورة يوسف 25 مرة في 24 آية: 4، 7، 8، 9، 10، 11، 17، 21، 29، 46، 51، 56، 58، 69، 76، 77، 80، 84، 85، 87، 89، 90 (مرتين)، 94، 99، ففي الآية 90 قال إخوته: (أإنك لأنت يوسف قال أنا يوسف وهذا أخي) (يوسف 12: 90)، وآخر موضع حين دخل عليه أبواه في مصر (يوسف 12: 99)، ولا يبلغ اسم نبي آخر هذا العدد في سورة واحدة، فاسم موسى عليه السلام ورد في القرآن 136 مرة، وأكثر ما ورد في سورة واحدة 21 مرة في سورة الأعراف.

Allah says: We relate to you the best of stories through Our revealing this Quran to you (12:3). And He says: Indeed, in the story of Yusuf and his brothers there are lessons for all who ask (12:7). Ibn Kathir explains: in the story of Yusuf and his account with his brothers there are signs, meaning lessons and admonitions, for those who ask about it and seek to know it, for it is a wondrous account worth asking about.
نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ الْقَصَصِ بِمَا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ (سورة يوسف: 3)

قال تعالى: (نحن نقص عليك أحسن القصص بما أوحينا إليك هذا القرآن) (يوسف 12: 3)، وقال تعالى: (لقد كان في يوسف وإخوته آيات للسائلين) (يوسف 12: 7)، قال ابن كثير: يقول تعالى: لقد كان في قصة يوسف وخبره مع إخوته آيات، أي عبرة ومواعظ للسائلين عن ذلك، المستخبرين عنه، فإنه خبر عجيب، يستحق أن يستخبر عنه.

Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet said: The noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble: Yusuf son of Ya’qub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim (Sahih al-Bukhari 3390). Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet was asked who is the most honorable of people; he said: the most pious of them. They said they were not asking about this, so he said: then Yusuf, the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the Khalil of Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 3353). Yusuf himself named his forefathers: I follow the faith of my fathers, Ibrahim, Ishaq and Ya’qub (12:38).
وَاتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ آبَائِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ (سورة يوسف: 38)

عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "الكريم ابن الكريم ابن الكريم ابن الكريم يوسف بن يعقوب بن إسحاق بن إبراهيم عليهم السلام" (صحيح البخاري 3390)، وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قيل: يا رسول الله، من أكرم الناس؟ قال: "أتقاهم"، فقالوا: ليس عن هذا نسألك، قال: "فيوسف نبي الله ابن نبي الله ابن نبي الله ابن خليل الله" (صحيح البخاري 3353)، وقال يوسف عليه السلام: (واتبعت ملة آبائي إبراهيم وإسحاق ويعقوب) (يوسف 12: 38).

Outside his own surah, Yusuf is named twice: in Al-An’am 6:84, among the prophets Allah guided, and in Ghafir: Yusuf came to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt about what he brought you (40:34). Ibn Kathir explains that this addresses the people of Egypt: Allah had sent Yusuf to them as a messenger before Musa; he was the ’Aziz of Egypt and called his people, the Copts, to Allah, but they obeyed him only for his office and worldly standing.
وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا زِلْتُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِّمَّا جَاءَكُم بِهِ (سورة غافر: 34)

وورد اسمه خارج سورته في موضعين: في الأنعام بين الأنبياء الذين هداهم الله (الأنعام 6: 84)، وفي غافر: (ولقد جاءكم يوسف من قبل بالبينات فما زلتم في شك مما جاءكم به) (غافر 40: 34)، قال ابن كثير: يعني: أهل مصر، قد بعث الله فيهم رسولا من قبل موسى، وهو يوسف عليه السلام، كان عزيز أهل مصر، وكان رسولا يدعو إلى الله أمته القبط، فما أطاعوه تلك الساعة إلا لمجرد الوزارة والجاه الدنيوي.
