Why Was the Cow Allah Ordered Slaughtered So Hard to Find?
لماذا كانت البقرة التي أمر الله بذبحها صعبة المنال؟
At first, Allah's command was that they had to slaughter a cow, without specifying its description, because the purpose was to show them His miracle: by striking the dead man with a part of it, Allah would revive him so he could guide them to his killer, and the problem would be over.
However, whenever they asked Moses about its description, Allah the Almighty made the matter a little more difficult for them. They did not stop asking for more descriptions, because they did not want to comply with Allah's command, out of stubbornness toward Moses. Had they obeyed Allah's command from the very beginning, the matter would have ended, and the cow they needed was ordinary and readily available.
كان الأمر من الله تعالى في البداية أن يذبحوا بقرة، ولم يحدد الله أوصافها، فكانت الغاية أن يريهم إعجازه بأن يضربوا الميت بجزءٍ منها فيحيي الميت ليدلهم على قاتله، وتنتهي المشكلة.
لكنهم كلما سألوا موسى عن وصفها كان الله تعالى يصعّب عليهم الأمر قليلاً. فلم يتوقفوا؛ كانوا لا يريدون الامتثال لأمر الله تعنتًا منهم على موسى، لأنهم لو طبّقوا أمر الله أول مرة لكان الموضوع انتهى، فكانت البقرة عادية ومتوفرة.
1. No Cow Was Specified at First | لم تُحدَّد بقرةٌ بعينها في البداية
The original command was open-ended: any cow would have worked, since the point was to demonstrate Allah's power over life and death through the miracle of the resurrected witness, not to test the people with an impossible search.
كان الأمر الأصلي مفتوحًا: أي بقرةٍ كانت كافية، إذ كانت الغاية إظهار قدرة الله على الحياة والموت من خلال معجزة الشاهد المُحيا، لا اختبار القوم ببحثٍ مستحيل.
2. Difficulty Was Self-Inflicted | صعوبةٌ من صنع أيديهم
Every restriction that made the cow harder to find (its age, its color, its never having been used for labor) came directly from the people's own repeated questioning rather than from the original command, as why Allah made the cow so specific explains. 3. A Lesson in the Cost of Stubbornness | درسٌ في ثمن التعنت
The point drawn from this sequence is straightforward: prompt obedience to a clear command spares real hardship, while resistance dressed up as caution or extra questions tends to make the very thing being avoided more burdensome, not less. Ibn Kathir reports from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Ubaydah that had they slaughtered any cow at all, it would have sufficed them, but they made the matter difficult, so Allah made it more difficult for them.
