Why Did Yaqoub Tell His Sons to Enter Egypt Through Separate Gates?
Yaqoub ordered his sons not to enter through one gate when they reached Egypt, so as not to attract undue attention to themselves, but to enter through different gates. He feared the evil eye should they all proceed through a single gate. He told them this was only a precaution, for Allah’s decree is inescapable and His judgment cannot be turned back by anything apart from His own will, and a believer should always prepare to carry out what they intend, exert their effort, and then entrust the outcome to Allah, seeking His help and success. “He then instructed them, ‘O my sons! Do not enter the city all through one gate, but through separate gates. I cannot help you against what is destined by Allah in the least. It is only Allah Who decides. In Him I put my trust. And in Him let the faithful put their trust.’ Then when they entered as their father had instructed them, this did not help them against the Will of Allah whatsoever. It was just a desire in Yaqoub’s heart which he satisfied. He was truly blessed with great knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most people have no knowledge” (Surah Yusuf 12:67-68).
1. Taking Precautions Without Contradicting Faith in Qadar |
Yaqoub’s instruction is treated by scholars as a foundational example that taking practical precautions is fully compatible with complete trust in Allah’s decree, not a contradiction of it. He explicitly told his sons the gates offered him no power over Allah’s will at all, framing the advice as ordinary prudence rather than any attempt to control fate.
2. A Real Concern Recognized in Islamic Teaching |
Yaqoub’s fear of the evil eye reflects a concern the Quran and authentic hadith both acknowledge as real, eleven attractive young men entering together would draw exactly the kind of attention that could invite envy. This precaution, guarding against a real social and spiritual risk, is distinct from superstition, since it was paired immediately with an explicit statement that ultimate protection belongs to Allah alone.
3. A Precaution the Quran Says Achieved Nothing Against Fate |
The Quran states directly that entering through separate gates “did not help them against the Will of Allah whatsoever,” calling it merely “a desire in Yaqoub’s heart which he satisfied.” This closing line is treated by commentators as essential context, the brothers still walked directly into the presence of the very brother whose fate this precaution could never have prevented from unfolding.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Yusuf 12:67-68 records Yaqoub’s precaution against the evil eye alongside his own explicit acknowledgment that no precaution could override Allah’s decree, a balance between practical wisdom and complete trust in Allah. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Yusuf.
