Why Did Allah Almighty Not Accept the Repentance of Pharaoh?
Allah the Almighty says: (But as Pharaoh was drowning, he cried out, “I believe that there is no god except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am ˹now˺ one of those who submit.” ˹He was told,˺ “Now ˹you believe˺? But you always disobeyed and were one of the corruptors. Today We will preserve your corpse so that you may become an example for those who come after you. And surely most people are heedless of Our examples!”) Yunus 10:90-92
First: Pharaoh, due to his arrogance and pride, did not say “There is no god but Allah alone,” which is easier than what he actually said, “there is no god except that in whom the Children of Israel believe,” even though he claimed to be the lord most high and knew that claim was false (Note: the original answer said he claimed to be “the Lord of the Worlds”; the Quran records his claim as “I am your lord, the most high!” (An-Nazi’at 79:24), so this has been corrected).
Second: Repentance is accepted from a servant as long as he does not see the signs of death by witnessing the angels. Allah says in the Quran: “Allah only accepts the repentance of those who commit evil ignorantly ˹or recklessly˺ then repent soon after, Allah will pardon them. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. However, repentance is not accepted from those who knowingly persist in sin until they start dying, and then cry, ‘Now I repent!’ nor those who die as disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.” An-Nisa 4:17-18
It was reported in the authentic Hadith: “Allah accepts the repentance of His slave so long as the death rattle has not yet reached his throat” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3537, Sunan Ibn Majah 4253).
Third: The Quran tells us that within a person’s lifetime there is ample time to return to Allah before reaching the state of death, which is why Allah said to Pharaoh, “Now?”, meaning: Is this the time for repentance and Islam, after believing? You spent your whole life disobedient and defiant toward Allah and His law, disbelieving in His Messenger and abusing His servants in every kind of way? Repentance must come before one’s appointed time arrives, and none of us know when that time will come.
(We brought the Children of Israel across the sea. Then Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them unjustly and oppressively. But as Pharaoh was drowning, he cried out, “I believe that there is no god except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am ˹now˺ one of those who submit.”) Yunus 10:90
Note: The quotation above is Yunus 10:90; the original answer labelled it 10:91, so the reference has been corrected.
(˹He was told,˺ “Now ˹you believe˺? But you always disobeyed and were one of the corruptors. Today We will preserve your corpse so that you may become an example for those who come after you. And surely most people are heedless of Our examples!”) Yunus 10:91-92
This is a fact, as indicated in the last Ayah: the mummies, the actual bodies of the Pharaohs, can be found on display in museums in Egypt, Paris, and elsewhere. Their bodies stand as proof of Allah’s power for those who are heedless.
1. Even the Confession Itself Was Still Arrogant |
The answer points out that even facing death, Pharaoh could not bring himself to say the simple, direct phrase “there is no god but Allah.” Instead he framed his declaration around the Children of Israel’s belief rather than his own direct submission, a small but telling sign that pride persisted even in his final words.
2. A General Rule: Repentance Has a Cutoff |
Surah An-Nisa 4:17-18 lays out a general principle that applies to anyone, not Pharaoh specifically: repentance is accepted from those who err and turn back soon after, but not from those who wait until death is upon them, nor from those who die still disbelieving. Pharaoh’s case is presented as a clear instance of this second, rejected category.
3. A Hadith Marking the Same Boundary |
A supporting hadith (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3537 and Sunan Ibn Majah 4253, graded hasan by al-Albani) states that Allah accepts a servant’s repentance so long as the death rattle has not yet reached his throat, that is, until the soul is at the point of leaving the body. This detail matters because it shows the cutoff is not arbitrary: repentance genuinely remains open right up to the point of death itself, which is exactly what places Pharaoh’s underwater confession just past the line.
4. “Now?” A Single Word Weighing an Entire Lifetime | “آلآن؟”
Allah’s response, simply “Now?”, is read as a rhetorical question weighing the entirety of Pharaoh’s long life of disobedience against this single, final, forced admission. The brevity of the reply matches the scale of what it dismisses: decades of defiance are not undone by a confession offered only once every alternative had run out.
5. A Warning Still Visible Today |
The Ayah’s own stated purpose for preserving Pharaoh’s body was to make him an example for those who came after, and the answer notes that such preservation is still visible today, with mummified remains identified as Pharaonic on display in museums in Egypt, Paris, and elsewhere. Ibn Kathir reports from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and others that the sea cast Pharaoh’s body onto high ground so the Children of Israel could confirm his death; the preserved Pharaonic mummies seen today are a reminder of the same lesson.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Yunus 10:90-92 records Pharaoh’s rejected deathbed confession, while Surah An-Nisa 4:17-18 lays out the general principle that repentance offered only once death is certain is not accepted. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Yunus.
Frequently Asked Questions |
Why did Allah not accept Pharaoh’s repentance?
Because it came only once death was certain, after a lifetime of disbelief, past the point repentance can be accepted.
Was there something arrogant about Pharaoh’s confession itself?
According to the answer, yes: he avoided directly saying there is no god but Allah, referring instead to the Children of Israel’s belief.
What is the general Quranic rule about accepted repentance?
That Allah accepts repentance from those who err and return soon after, but not from those who wait until death is upon them.
What does the hadith say about the timing of accepted repentance?
That Allah accepts a servant’s repentance so long as the death rattle has not yet reached his throat.
Can Pharaoh’s preserved body still be seen today?
The Ayah says his body was saved as a sign, and Ibn Kathir explains it was cast ashore so people could confirm his death. Which mummy, if any, is his is not established, though many Pharaonic mummies are displayed in museums in Egypt, Paris, and elsewhere.
