Why are hypocrites considered dangerous?
Every society faces external threats, but the internal enemy is always the most lethal. In Islamic teachings, hypocrisy is treated with the utmost severity precisely because it destroys the community from within under the guise of loyalty.
The Hidden Enemy |
Hypocrites are the Muslims' worse enemies, because an external enemy is clearly an enemy. You know their intentions and can protect yourself. Whereas a hypocrite is someone who people trust and consider a Muslim and one of them, while he secretly conceals hatred towards them.
This deception allows them to learn the secrets of the believers, sow discord, and strike when the community is most vulnerable.
The Severe Punishment |
Because of this supreme betrayal of trust and the massive danger they pose, the punishment for a hypocrite is far greater than that of a regular disbeliever. Allah Almighty has reserved the absolute lowest level of Hell for them.
(Surely the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire and you will never find for them any helper) Surah An Nisa'a 4: 145.
Scholarly Insight: Islamic scholars emphasize that an open enemy unites the believers, making them stronger and more vigilant. A hypocrite, however, divides the believers from within, spreading rumors and breaking trust. Because their crime is double they commit the sin of disbelief and the sin of deception their punishment in the Hereafter is multiplied, placing them below the idolaters in the depths of Hell.
