How Can a Person Get Rid of the Trait of Hypocrisy?
How does someone get rid of the trait of hypocrisy?
The answer gives four ways to rid oneself of hypocrisy: strengthening faith, since the more faith grows the less hypocrisy remains; supplication and asking Allah for steadfastness; remembering Allah and reciting the Quran, so that one's private and public self become the same; and remembering the disgrace and punishment prepared for the hypocrites.
The Four Methods of Spiritual Purification
To rid oneself of the trait of hypocrisy completely, a Muslim should follow these steps:
1. Strengthening and Increasing Faith
Because faith and hypocrisy cannot meet in one soul; they are complete opposites, so the more faith grows in a soul, the less hypocrisy there is. True faith shows in righteous deeds: loving Allah, obeying Him, holding to His commands, and avoiding His prohibitions.
2. Sincere Supplication (Dua)
Supplication, which is a person's refuge: in it he seeks refuge with Allah from every evil and from the path of the hypocrites, and asks Allah for steadfastness on truth and truthfulness.
3. Constant Remembrance and Quran Recitation
Because remembrance brings to mind that Allah watches in private and in public, so that one's inner and outer self become the same, and the contradiction and division that the hypocrite lives in his daily life disappear.
4. Reflecting on the Consequence of Hypocrisy
To always remember what Allah has prepared for the hypocrites: disgrace in this world and a painful punishment in the Hereafter, which awakens the conscience and builds a strong inner shield against deception.
1. The Companions Feared Hypocrisy |
In the Book of Faith of his Sahih, al-Bukhari cites Ibn Abi Mulaykah: I met thirty of the Companions of the Prophet, each of them fearing hypocrisy for himself; none of them said that he had the faith of Jibril and Mika'il. He also cites from al-Hasan: none fears it but a believer, and none feels safe from it but a hypocrite.
2. Asking for a Steadfast Heart |
The answer counts supplication among the cures, asking Allah for steadfastness. The Prophet often said: O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion; when Anas asked whether he feared for them, he said: Yes, hearts are between two of the fingers of Allah; He turns them as He wills (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2140, graded sahih by al-Albani). Among the Quran's supplications: Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us (Al-Imran 3:8).
3. An Hour and an Hour |
Hanzala, one of the Prophet's scribes, feared that he had become a hypocrite: with the Prophet, reminded of the Fire and Paradise, it was as if they saw them, but at home with wives, children, and estates they forgot much. The Prophet said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you remained as you are with me and in remembrance, the angels would shake your hands on your beds and in your paths; but, Hanzala, an hour and an hour (Sahih Muslim 2750). A change of state is not hypocrisy, and remembrance renews the heart, as the answer's third remedy says.
Scholarly Insight: The answer's four remedies match how the Companions guarded themselves: Ibn Abi Mulaykah met thirty Companions who each feared hypocrisy for himself (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Faith), and the Prophet often asked the Turner of hearts to make his heart firm (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2140). He also reassured Hanzala that a heart's change between gatherings of remembrance and family life is not hypocrisy (Sahih Muslim 2750). Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Imran.
