Which Surah Begins With the Word Surah?
Surah An-Nur: ([This is] a surah which We have sent down) [An-Nur 24:1]
1. A Surah Which We Have Sent Down | سورة أنزلناها
Allah opens Surah An-Nur by describing it: a surah which We have sent down and made obligatory, and in which We have sent down clear verses, so that you may take heed (24:1). Ibn Kathir explains that this opening draws attention to the care owed to this surah, without lessening the others.
2. And Made Obligatory |
Mujahid and Qatada said that made obligatory means: We made clear in it the lawful and the unlawful, the commands and prohibitions, and the prescribed punishments. Ibn Kathir adds that al-Bukhari said: whoever reads it as farradnaha says: We made it obligatory upon you and upon those after you.
3. The Only Verse That Opens With Surah |
Checking every verse of the Mushaf, 24:1 is the only verse that begins with the word surah. Other surahs open in other ways: with the opening letters, as explained in how many surahs start with Alif Lam Mim, or with praise of Allah, as in which surahs begin with Al-Hamdulillah.
4. The Verse of Light |
The word that names the surah comes in the Verse of Light: Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth (24:35). Ibn Kathir reports from Ibn Abbas: He is the guide of the people of the heavens and the earth. The Prophet would say when he rose at night to pray: O Allah, to You belongs the praise; You are the Light of the heavens and the earth (Sahih al-Bukhari 6317).
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir notes that the words a surah which We have sent down are a reminder to give this surah special care, since it was made obligatory and its rulings were made clear. Read more in the tafsir of Surah An-Nur.
