When Did the Revelation Begin, at What Age, and in Which Month?
1. Scholars state that the duration of the true dreams was six months, as mentioned above, and therefore the beginning of the prophecy with the true vision in sleep, occurred on his birthday which is the Rabi Al-Awal at the age of forty years, and the beginning of the revelation of wakefulness in Ramadan of the same year.
2. The scholars agree that the start of the revelation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was at the age of forty.
3. Historians have differed in determining the month in which Allah honored His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by sending the revelation to him, and it is more appropriate in what is stated in the Qur’an and Sunnah to say the following:
a. The Qur’an told us that the revelation of the Qur’an in the month of Ramadan
( Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed )
b. It specifies on which night the Quran was revealed As Allah Almighty says:
( Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory)
It is well known that the ‘night of glory’ Laylat al-Qadr is in Ramadan, and it is intended in the following Ayah: ( Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺.)
c. The Prophet’s Sunnah reflected that the Night of Destiny falls on the last ten of Ramadan, as in the hadith about Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.”
And in another narration of this Hadith:
“Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” )
d. The Prophet’s Sunnah showed that the revelation of the Qur’an was on Monday, and in the hadith of Abu Qatada al-Harith ibn Rab’i, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It was the day on which I was born, and on which I was commissioned with prophethood, or revelation was sent to me.”
This means that the revelation was when he was forty years old, and the beginning of the revelation was on Monday in the month of Ramadan, and on the Night of Power which falls in Witr from the last ten days.
e. Professor Al-Mubarakfoori relays in his book “Al-Raheeq Almakhtoum” that Ramadan in the year in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) received his mission was on Monday (the seventh, fourteenth, twenty-first, and twenty-eighth days) and based on the texts, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent the revelation on the twenty-first day of Ramadan at night.
1. The Six-Month Preliminary Phase: True Dreams in Rabi' al-Awwal |
Scholars of prophetic biography note that the initial spark of revelation began in the month of the Prophet's birth, Rabi' al-Awwal, when he turned forty. This took the form of infallible, vivid dreams that materialized in daytime reality with crystalline certainty, lasting approximately six months.
2. The Ratio of True Dreams to Prophethood |
In an authentic hadith, the Prophet stated: "The true dream of a righteous believer is one part of forty-six parts of prophethood." Scholars calculate that the total duration of the Prophet's mission was twenty-three years (46 six-month intervals), perfectly aligning with this six-month preliminary phase of dreams.
3. The Direct Descent of Gabriel in Ramadan |
Following six months of preparatory dreams, the second and definitive phase occurred in Ramadan in Cave Hira. There, Archangel Gabriel descended physically in waking consciousness to deliver the foundational five verses of Surah Al-'Alaq, initiating the Quranic revelation.
4. Harmony Between the Two Historical Milestones |
This two-stage progression harmonizes reports dating the start of prophethood to Rabi' al-Awwal with those dating it to Ramadan. The initial inspiration commenced in Rabi' al-Awwal via visions, while the official commissioning with the Noble Quran occurred in Ramadan.
Scholarly Insight: The progression from true visions to waking angelic revelation illustrates the divine wisdom of gradually elevating the Prophet's human perception to bear the weight of direct revelation. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Ad-Dukhan.
