What Were the Miracles (Signs) Granted to Moses (PBUH)?
Allah granted him two Divine Signs: His staff (or stick) which turned into a serpent. His hand, when he put it under his armpit, it turned white. He was also guided to relax and calm down. Allah the Almighty says: (And cross your arms tightly to calm your fears) Al-Qasas 28:32
(We surely gave Moses nine clear signs. ˹You, O Prophet, can˺ ask the Children of Israel. When Moses came to them, Pharaoh said to him, “I really think that you, O Moses, are bewitched.”) Al-Isra’ 17:101
(˹Allah added,˺ “And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?” He replied, “It is my staff! I lean on it, and with it I beat down ˹branches˺ for my sheep, and have other uses for it.” Allah said, “Throw it down, O Moses!” So he did, then, behold, it became a serpent, slithering. Allah said, “Take it, and have no fear. We will return it to its former state.”) Ta-Ha 20:17-21
(“Now, throw down your staff!” But when he saw it slithering like a snake, he ran away without looking back. ˹Allah reassured him,˺ “O Moses! Do not be afraid! Messengers should have no fear in My presence.”) An-Naml 27:10
(“Now, throw down your staff!” But when he saw it slithering like a snake, he ran away without looking back. ˹Allah reassured him,˺ “O Moses! Draw near, and have no fear. You are perfectly secure.”) Al-Qasas 28:31
Allah also instructed Moses to put his hand inside his cloak, and this is the second Divine sign of His Magnificence and Omnipotence. Moses needed those Divine Signs while accomplishing his mission, so that they would be proofs for those who were disobedient and rebellious.
(And put your hand under your armpit, it will come out ˹shining˺ white, unblemished, as another sign,) Ta-Ha 20:22
(“Now put your hand through ˹the opening of˺ your collar, it will come out ˹shining˺ white, unblemished. ˹These are two˺ of nine signs for Pharaoh and his people. They have truly been a rebellious people.”) An-Naml 27:12
(“Now put your hand through ˹the opening of˺ your collar, it will come out ˹shining˺ white, unblemished. And cross your arms tightly to calm your fears. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They have truly been a rebellious people.”) Al-Qasas 28:32
1. A Simple Question Before an Extraordinary Sign |
Allah begins not with a command but a question, “What is that in your right hand, O Moses?” Musa answers plainly, describing his staff’s ordinary daily uses, leaning on it and beating down branches for his sheep, before anything miraculous happens at all. This exchange grounds the sign that follows in something completely familiar to him.
2. The Staff Becomes a Slithering Serpent |
When Musa throws down the ordinary staff he had just described, it becomes a moving serpent, and his instinctive reaction, fleeing without looking back, shows this was a genuine shock to him, not a display he had expected or prepared for. Three separate surahs record this same instinctive fear, underscoring how startling the transformation truly was.
3. A Reassurance Specific to Messengers |
Allah’s response to Musa’s fear is not a generic comfort but a statement tied specifically to his new status, “Messengers should have no fear in My presence,” and in Al-Qasas, “you are perfectly secure.” This frames the reassurance as part of what it means to carry a divine mission, not simply calming an individual’s nerves.
4. A Second Sign: A Hand That Shines Without Blemish |
The second sign, Musa’s hand turning white when placed under his arm or through his collar, is deliberately described as “without blemish,” language repeated in Ta-Ha, An-Naml and Al-Qasas. This detail rules out any confusion with disease, this was a miraculous, radiant whiteness, not a mark of illness.
5. A Practical Technique Paired With Spiritual Reassurance |
Alongside the words of comfort, Musa is given a concrete physical instruction, to cross his arms tightly to calm his fear. Pairing a practical action with the verbal reassurance treats his fear as something real to be managed, not simply dismissed with words alone.
6. Two Signs Among Nine, for a Rebellious People | آيتان من تسع لقومٍ فاسقين
An-Naml and Al-Qasas explicitly call these two signs proofs meant for Pharaoh and his chiefs, describing them as “a rebellious people,” and Surah Al-Isra 17:101 confirms Musa was given nine clear signs in total across his mission. These two, given at the very start, are only the first evidence in what would become a much larger confrontation.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Ta-Ha 20:17-22, An-Naml 27:10-12, and Al-Qasas 28:31-32 all record the staff turning into a serpent and Musa’s hand turning white without blemish, two of the nine total signs mentioned in Surah Al-Isra 17:101, given as proofs to Pharaoh and his rebellious people. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha.
